So I was looking at Ultrabay DVD's for convenience / visual matching sake to use with the Ultrabase - they're not absolutely necessary as I have a small stash of USB Samsungs - I was kind of floored by the price.

    >$200!!!! (And well over that, in this neck of the woods)

If they're that much, I'm defo not buying - I waded into the store thinking they'd be like ~$70, and...

... well, I picked my jaw up off the floor soon after.

    What gives? Are there alternatives?

I'd check eBay if they'll ship to your area? I think I've seen some BD Ultrabay drives floating around there for $200. I'm sure a regular DVD/RW would be much less expensive.

I use eBay for the Ultrabays too, they tend to sell much less than the recommended retail price by Lenovo and generally are OEM (I haven't come across a "knock-off" ultrabay drive yet).

This is the first time I have seen Vogel cringed at the price of parts. Getbit through eBay, alternatively go to marketplace on forum.lenovo.com.

    Exactly! :D ;) :p

What search term should I be looking for on Fleabay for the X200 Ultrabase drive? I tried the actual part it should be and I didn't spot anything that didn't look a) fishy b) that much cheaper

X200 ultrabay uses a 9.5mm sata optical drive. There's lots of cheaper options on ebay if can forgo a perfect faceplate with Lenovo written on it.

The sole reason I'd be doing it is for the visual aspect - i.e. no mismatched external drive. Ergo, not much point if it's going to be visually a kludge. But I'd settle for an OEM alternative that looks the same as long as it won't screw anything up.

Hmmm... The only cheap ones I get are from China, and those who're clearly gaming the 'Top-Rated Seller' ratings.

Anyone have a part number I can search by? Perhaps I was doing it wrong. Thanks

I don't usually post detailed information about eBay auctions. However, since you asked...

I just bought a DVD-RW drive for X200 Ultrabase two weeks ago on eBay for $79. Shipping was free, but I had to play tax because the seller is in California. Fast shipping, and the item (Serial Ultrabay Slim DVD Multi IV, FRU 45N7451, in what looks like Lenovo OEM packaging) works as advertised.

The item is titled "Lenovo 43N3229 43N3214 THINKPAD DVD ULTRABAY SLIM DRIVE" and the seller is greatwebdealz. $79 is toward the more expensive end of the price range on eBay, but I need it in a hurry and cannot wait for the item to arrive from China or wherever.
