I am wondering if the GMA 4500 found in the X200 is correctly hardware accelerating decoding of h.264 videos?

    I found this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=299791
    which made me worry.

Basically, can I play 720p h.264 videos without problem on a X200 if I buy one today? Hopefully some X200 owners can provide feedback.

    x4500mhd does hardware acceleration. x4500m doesn't.

however i believe all thinkpads have x4500mhd for integrated graphics

you would need the programs that support the hardware acceleration, obviously

I did not read the linked thread at all. But, it works fine for me on my x200s, the overlay on this video takes up more usage than the video itself. It peaks at around the 32% you can see and averages ~10%. Actually, it probably spiked because I was seeking through the file =P.

WMP 12 actually uses dxva out of box too. Download like Shark007 codecs to handle mkv files with WMP12 if you want to keep it simple.

Attached a screenshot of Iron Man 2 trailer. It's a .mov playing in KMPlayer. I can play the bird scene from earth @ 42mbits smoothly as well.

    Thanks for the replies.

The thread I linked to indicates that there was a problem with the GM 4500 on the X200, or that the panels (CCFL I think) used for X200 all were subpar and had problems showing video playback satisfactory. I am unsure if the problem persists today, but if it does, it would be very bad.

    @aznguyphan
The X200s might use different screens, and not have this problem. Do you have a LED screen?

Yeah I have the x200s LED 1280x800 screen. It may even be a screen/lid from a x200 because I have a webcam and UltraConnect II (something not available for the x200s in the US but is available in elsewhere).

I'm not a good judge of screens though. I came from a glossy 14" 1280x800 HP DV4 screen which I liked a lot, but I like the x200s' screen much more. But that's probably because of the higher pixel density and matte finish. And I even run this screen at 50hz and see no difference.

The complaints regarding the x200 were the screen. I use the x200 docked with a HP 24inch IPS panel and it does hardware acceleration just fine setup properly with MediaPlayerClassic.

are you using the K-Lite Codec? I found this works the best.

Ok, so basically, hardware acceleration seems to work as it should. It's just that the screen on the X200 can be very subpar for watching movies. I am surprised Lenovo use such a bad screen...

I guess the only safe option would be to avoid the X200 all together, or do one of those screen swaps I've seen mentioned here (AFFS screens).

I believe the distinction is only present in desktops with the GMA 4500, not in laptops - all Montevina laptops with Intel graphics have the GMA 4500MHD, so they are capable of HD content decoding.

K-lite is pretty bad because it generally is just throwing a bunch of filters together and can lead to conflicts. I use CCCP from www.cccp-project.net

The x4500MHD in the x200(s/T) accelerates h.264 perfectly well (I use Media Player Classic [ source]).

However, you are right that the panel in the x200 is quite subpar and is not satisfactory (in my opinion at least) for video playback. The quality of the panel is the primary reason I returned my x200 and got an x200 Tablet (far far superior display).
