    Hi,

I was wondering if it was possible to disable the boot up beep on my X200s. It occurs right after you enter your Power On Password.

Alternatively, is it possible to lower the volume of the beep?

I've tried looking in the BIOS under "Beep and Alarm", but couldn't find anything. I have Password, Low Battery and Power Control Beeps all disabled.

    Thanks!

Please try and convey the sound imparted by the machine. Believe ir or not, there is information encoded in the form of duration.

    Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.

It's a single, solid, loud beep that lasts about 0.75 seconds.

It occurs when I boot up from being shut off and when I resume from hibernation. Both of these actions require me to enter my Power On and Hard Drive password.

It occurs right after my Hard Drive password is entered, but right before it seems to start booting up the OS.

Is it not normal to have my X200s beep at this time?

    Thanks!

My x200 Tablet never beeps (except when I upgrade the BIOS). However, I do NOT have a power on password enabled.

Renee may be right that it is a POST beep code, but those usually come BEFORE you are prompted for a password.

    Thanks for chiming in jonlumpkin.

Does anyone else who have their Power On Password enabled confirm this?

    Thanks!

Yes you can disable it. Go into bios and turn off beeps...

I turn it off for everything. Some are for errors though that you might legitimately might to know about.

    Hi,

Thanks for the tip. But, I've disabled all the beeps in the BIOS under "Beep and Alarm". I have Password, Low Battery, Power Control, and now Keyboard, Beeps are all disabled. And the boot up beep still exists.

Is there another BIOS location that contain beep options?

    Thanks!

I have an X200s with HDD pw and power on password enabled and there are no beeps on my system when turning it on from completely off state. There should be settings in BIOS options to turn beeps off completely.

Try going to Power Manager, select Global Power Settings, and see if "Beep when power stage changes" is checked.

Hmm, I already had this setting disabled. But thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not sure what the problem is at this point.

I suspect that it isn't a warning beep, but, just a notification beep. It's only really bothering me, as it's really loud, and when I turn my laptop on in meetings, it's a bit disruptive.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I think I might have figured out where the beep is coming from.

In the BIOS boot options, I have disabled the Quick boot. On my desktop it defaults to extended/standard boot (where you see the BIOS version, peripherals initialize, etc, and not just a splash screen).

I've discovered that in the X200s BIOS when you disable Quick boot, it enabled Diagnostic boot.

I have also found this for the Thinkpad R30:

    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-39706

It indicates that one short beep indicates the end of diagnostic boot.

However I haven't found any corresponding documentation for the X200s.

Would someone be able to verify for me that when they set their laptop to Diagnostic boot, it beeps to indicate a successful pass?

    Thanks!

Would anyone mind testing this for me?

    Thanks!

Why don't you just enable quick boot then? Why did you disable quick boot?

Oh, I can disable the beep by using Quick boot instead of Diagnostic.

I just wanted to confirm that a single beep was an indication of a successful, non-error, beep code.

    Sorry for the confusion.

i can confirm that behaviour, i wanted to get rid of that fancy Thinkpad splash screen by disabling Quick Boot but the beep annoys me more than the screen... can't have it all i suppose

    Thanks for posting your findings!

I'm glad my machine is behaving properly.

    Thanks again!
