In Thailand they have been selling a X200s with very similar specs for about 6 months now.

    Intel® Celeron Processor ULV723 1.2 GHz
    1 or 2GB DDR3 RAM
    HDD 250 SATA 5400 rpm
    12.1 " WXGA TFT 1280x800
    Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
    WLAN/LAN/MODEM/Bluetooth/ Card reader/Fingerprint
    No OS
    Battery 6 Cell
    3 International Years Warranty

Priced very close to netbooks, but needless to say much superior.

Really weak cpu. That thing will crawl at a snail's pace. I saw some 1.4 cpu's in the X200's and they were so slow that they lagged.

Where in Thailand did you find X200 laptops? I was there recently and did not find any Lenovo X200 laptops.

Really depends on the task. The one I tested was more than fine for Office apps and Internet.

I'd take it over a netbook any day as it is really just a CPU crippled X200s with the usual ThinkPad qualities.

X200s is also available with Celeron 723 in Taiwan and in the U.S. (there are a few in the Lenovo outlet right now). I think X200s with SU2300 is much more interesting because:
    1. 723 is single-core, and U2300 is dual core,
    2. 723 does not support Enhanced Speedstep, but U2300 does.

Just go to an Authorized Lenovo dealer - you will find them in some shopping malls or some of the IT malls, like the one in the Rama 9 area.

Yes it is interesting, but then again dual core is not properly utilized by many apps/users and those going for a slow CPU like the Celeron will most likely not be doing heavy work anyways and hence probably not need dual core processing that much.

In real life performance, my T43 with 2.0 GHz PM 760 which is not dual core runs just as fast as my old X61 T7300 2.0 GHz C2D for most of the tasks I throw at it.

Not to my knowledge. Never saw a X200s with the SL9600 CPU. Last time I went ThinkPad browsing in Bangkok was a month ago.

But just the operating system alone can bog down a single core fairly easily. Not so it's unusable, but so that it feels slow. Dual core processors, even if it isn't always benchmarkable, is one of those things that just makes a computer feel faster. Somewhere between memory upgrades (unless deficient) and an SSD, I'd say.

I somewhat agree. My point is actually the opposite. Dual core CPUs will outperform the single core CPU in benchmark programs, but in real life use many are still fully up to scratch.

In the case I am describing, both the T43 and the X61 are running XP SP3. When I compare real life performance I actually time it.

Bootup time is within 1-3 seconds difference. Working with Office 2003 apps or IE8 or Firefox 3.5 make no difference either. Outside of that of course you will be able to find usage where the T43 falls short. But my point is that for office apps and surfing you will not notice any difference other than perhaps psychologically :) Both are running 5400RPM HDDs which I generally find much more important than CPU speed.
