i was reading around as im contemplating buying an external monitor to use with my X201 and it seems like for best results i should use it with the Displayport/HDMI (cant remember which) on the dock.

What's wrong with using VGA? I connected it to my colleague's Full HD monitor and it worked fine. Is Full HD the limit or can i go higher like the res on those 30" monitors?

    cheers

My desktop has two Samsung 2333Ts hooked to it, one via DVI and other VGA. I honestly can't tell the difference.

VGA can do something like 2048x1536, if the monitor supports it over VGA. You would really need to check the specs on the monitor you want.

most WQXGA 30 incher don't have vga input, and there is very few vga port on modern computers that can support this sort of resolution.

Get the ultrabase x200 and hock it up with displayport, there is nothing worse than using an ultra high end monitor with crappy image quality.

I have hooked the X201t with my U2410 but the image quality is rather blurry as compared to the image quality when using the dock with dp.

VGA is iffy. Sometimes, it works just fine, sometimes not. I've hooked up my old Averatec via VGA to a 1920x1080 monitor and had text so blurry it was a pain to read, yet it works perfectly fine on a 1680x1050 monitor. So, generally, I try to use DP/HDMI/DVI for monitors/TVs over 1680x1050.

Remember that VGA has a clock and phase aspect that you need to correct for.
Most monitors should have a button to automatically detect clock and phase.

    Refer to this test image:

the dock is EXPENSIVE!! Any idea where i can pick one up for cheap? also since i dont really need the rest of the dock features, (in fact it would be quite annoying to have to use the dock since i travel back and forth between europe and asia for months at a time and will have to carry it around. Is there another option? cheers

Ebay has them. While, you could possibly get away with usb2dvi (but it has a bandwidth limitation, so no FHD video on the external monitor).

Alternatively get a vidock system, but that is usually more expensive unless you can get a second hand one for cheap.

if the monitor is just a FHD one it shouldnt be a problem for VGA right?

if you get a shielded vga cable then you should be able to get away with it.

usb2dvi can do FHD - including video playback. It just isn't the greatest for gaming as the video card in the device sucks - at least the lenovo usb2dvi.

On my X201T, they worked fine for me. I watched a lot of Netflix HD and Hulu HD full screen on a FHD Viewsonic LCD.

they reduce noise in the line, and since VGA uses analogue signal, any noise in the cables would come up screen artifacts on the external LCD.
