I have noticed that it seems like most people are getting the x201 with the i5 processor. I just placed an order for the x201i since based on what I have read the i3 isn't a whole lot slower then the i5, but it costs $225 less!

Just wanted to see what everyone else thought.

A wise move as typical notebook usage is not very CPU intensive. The better CPU will make little difference.

For the savings I figured I could pick up a nice 80gb Intel SSD and see a much bigger difference then with a better CPU.

If the only difference for $225 is a step down from an i5 to an i3 then you definitely made a wise choice in my mind. An SSD makes far more difference for the VAST majority of users.

    I'm ordering a X201i to replace my just-owned X201 for these reasons:

    - No Turbo Boost CPU, I'm planning to undervolt the thing and I don't think Turbo Boost enabled CPU will be happy while undervolted, may cause troubles while Turbo Boost kicks in. Just a guess, though.
    - Fingerprint Reader and Bluetooth aren't important to me, although I'm happy with the way Lenovo implement the fingerprint reader, very thoughtful and usable. But it's not necessary.
    - I can live with a little slower CPU, older CPU like P8600 or P8400 are far more than what I need, so i3 is still an upgrade.
    - Saved $$$ can be converted into an X25-M big boost in responsiveness for daily usage.

This X201 will go to my wife to replace her HP heater model TX1000. She told me she like the ThinkPad design, surprise!

It's not nearly as the i5 powerful because it does not have the turbo boost option. The i3 has a similar proformance of the older c2d 2.4ghz.

For most things, turbo boost will make little difference. Why pay more for it if you don't need it?

it's pre-configured only, AFAIK... CTO options will make unattractive any more because of the added $$$ as usual for CTO systems.

I'd say the X200 from the Outlet is a more compelling value unless you want the warranty upgrade.
