My Australian Lenovo sales rep. has told me the X201s is off the product list until further notice because of the lack of availability of the processors *and* lack of suitable WXGA+ LCDs.

The next shipment of processors from intel is expected mid-late June at the earliest. ... and even then the X201s may not become available due to a lack of suitable hi-res screens.

The reps have been instructed to contact all customers with outstanding X201s orders and transition them to other products or cancel the orders. I was given the option of just hanging onto my existing order to see what happens "mid-June"... but the rep thinks that Lenovo is likely to just cancel the order before then.

Can anyone suggest a US retailer that might have competitive pricing on the x201s with existing stock?

Can I do better than ebay?

Don't, for a single second, trust a word that any Lenovo phone monkey gives you. These guys know nothing, and what you were told is nothing more than that particular phone monkey's best guess on that particular day. Call him tomorrow, and you'll get a completely different story.

Actually what the OP said in regard to the X201s in Australia is true.

FWIW - there is a thread on thinkpads.com where a US rep is also saying the X201s is being discontinued and the OP there was also told of the screen shortage.

For now the only option for me appears to be one of the "TopSeller" X201s (damn that trackpad, and 32bit OS). I could hold my breath waiting for the X201s to magically be reborn... but I suspect that might be as likely as waiting for the mystical X302 (which would be my first choice if it existed).

... or I wait and keep using my X20 (painful) until the dust settles.

You can order the 64 bit OS recovery from Lenovo once you got the laptop, it costs around $60 dollars. Not sure why you hate the trackpad, if you don't like it you don't have to use it, it doesn't affect the function of the trackpoint. You can disable the trackpad.

I can corroborate what OP is saying. I heard initially from the rumor-mill that big players wiped out all the stocks of i7 640LM/620LM and that's why Lenovo could not get their hands on these and produce x201s. But it turns out that it was Intel that pulled these out of the market. So any companies who were using (or planning to use) i7 620/620lm were affected.
I was told that i7-620LM should be back June/July and i7-640LM for July. But, I would not hold my breath for June/July delivery.
The bottom line is that x201s won't be available for a while.

my X201S order was originally scheduled for the 04/22/10

    then the date went missing

now it re-scheduled to the 05/10/10

what are the chances that it will get shipped? if Intel has canceled the
I7 - 640lm then why are they re-scheduled my order instead of cancelling it?

I did not hear about the reason but that would be my guess.

    Now, this is my speculation.
640lm is supposed to come back later. That's why they did not actively cancel the order. According to the long time Lenovo/IBM users, it is not uncommon to wait for several months.
My unit with 640lm was scheduled to ship for 4/11 and pushed back to 4/13 and then 6/22 which can't be possible based on his statement as he said that 640lm will be available in July. I guess that they (or a system) is randomly assigning the later date. :(

    I feel the same way.

I'm also having doubts about the availability of warranty parts should something go wrong under warranty. If Lenovo can't source parts then a 3yr warranty isn't going to help much if the cpu or screen goes on the fritz and parts are back-ordered for 6 months.
