I have the i7 version of the X220 and its USB3 port is very useful. With a USB3 > SATA converter dongle you can connect an external SATA disk and it seems as fast as a direct SATA or eSATA connection for backups etc.
However I have one problem. I'd like to boot up from an external SATA disk on the USB3 port, but it hangs at the BIOS startup screen. It works OK from the much slower USB2 port, but not the USB3.
I've tried every possible BIOS setting, but nothing makes any difference.
Does anyone know how to do this, or if it is even possible?

Most likely you will have to wait until Intel integrates USB 3.0 into its chipset. The BIOS doesn't recognise the separate USB 3.0 controller.

Thank you John. I suspected that might be the case.

No, I'm only using basic 2D graphics and haven't found any throttling problems.
