Every several hours the connection drops, and without disabling and re-enabling the 3G mobile broadband F5521gw in Device Manager I am unable to re-connect.

I have tried different network operators in different areas, all the same problem regardless of signal strength.

Do I have a faulty modem?

I tried to install the latest driver from Lenovo but that doesn't seem to affect the driver version of the modem at all.

    Any suggestions?

I have never encountered any problem with that card. May I just haven't kept it running that long.

I have the same card in a T420s and have experienced similar issues e.g. signal suddenly drops off to one or two bars (from all bars lit up) or the network can no longer be found at all. Putting the same SIM in a 3g usb modem resolves the issue for me.

Usually if I keep using the connection then there's less chances I encounter this problem. When I leave my laptop idle for a night, it will 99% happen.
I have similar problems in my Nexus One and iPhone 3Gs.
So it's likely a driver issue of the 3G adapter - it cannot recover correctly from a bad / lost connection.

I have seen a similar problem with a Sprint USB modem at work. The solution there was to bring up task manager (ctrl + alt + del), go to processes and delete the Sprint process (don't remember the exact name, but Sprint was part of it). Now launch to the Sprint connection software and restart the connection.
