For the first time since I had my X220, I left it switched off for a week.
It was fully charged when I turned it off, but when I went to use it again the 9 cell battery was entirely discharged. With previous Thinkpads there has always been a good part of the charge left after a week.
I get at least 9 hours use off a charge and the battery utility says it's in good condition.
It seems that either this X200 takes a lot of current when switched off (and I did definitely turn it OFF), or the battery has a high self-discharge.
Has anyone else found the same?

This is unusual. Some Toshiba notebooks have a habit of draining their battery even when off but I've not seen this happen with other brands.
I suggest that you make some more observations to see if the same problem happens again.

Have you checked all the things that can wake the computer? Fingerprint, ethernet, wireless, etc? I don't think that would drain the 9 cell in a week, but who knows.
I had my x220 off for a four day weekend and when I returned it was at the exact charge I left it at... so I don't know what to tell you. -
Thanks for those comments guys - confirms what I thought.
Since I don't usually have the opportunity to leave it off for long it will be difficult to do lots of tests. But next time I will remove the battery and see if it discharges the same when it's not connected. -
My HP Mini 110's battery drained from 42% to 0% in like, I don't even know, 3 days? while the system was powered off with the battery in. But I believe that I read somewhere that if you enable the FPR while the machine is off, it drains battery. Also, why don't you just keep it on AC when it is off?

+1 on that. Check the fingerprint reader and ethernet. Those are your two biggest culprits. Disable all wake ability in the BIOS and in the Windows Control panel for each device (unless you need them to wake the machine that is).

Because I was away for a week and I turn everything off when I'm away.

I will check those points when I can. ATM the X220 is busy earning its keep! -
Something is clearly wrong there. I have my 9-cell plugged in with the battery set to not charge until it reaches 40%. I've had it sitting at 78% for over 3 weeks like this, without charging the battery.

It's the fingerprint reader. Disable its ability to turn the computer on/wake it from sleep with a single swipe and the problem should go away.

I am looking to minimise power usage when the machine is switched off/in standby. Can someone direct me how to switch off the various "wake-on XXX" devices?
- I disabled "use fingerprint scan as on/off switch" in the fingerprint software
- How to disable wake-on Lan?
- How to disable wake-on wireless?
- Anything else? -

I'm not convinced that this is the cause: I have that facility enabled on my T420s, hibernate the computer overnight and the battery drain is, at most, 1% per day.
First check in the BIOS to see what is offered. Then go through the devices in Device Manager, inspect the properties and make appropriate changes to those devices that have a Power Management tab.

I have the fingerprint reader running full-time on my X300 and that didn't run the battery down.
But my new SSD has just arrived and I'm going to do a fresh Win7 installation on that. It will be interesting to see it the same discharge happens with all new drivers installed. -
Any update on this? I too am experiencing this problem, will try to disable settings when i get home and report back.

cmd as admin: powercfg -devicequery wake_armed
see what comes out and disable it from dm. -
