Dear all,
I've received my X220 yesterday and after finalizing the Lenovo Windows 7 Professional installation the laptop keeps crashing/hanging when booting into windows after the login screen.
I've seen a popup balloon a few times saying 'Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered'. But than the system hangs again.
In safe mode I can boot into Windows actually and do some stuff. Like I have already updated the BIOS to 1.16 from 1.12. And installed all the latest Lenovo Drivers from the website. Service pack 1 installed and all the windows updates.
But still crashes right after the login screen in Windows... Any suggestions? Could this be a hardware malfunction? Seems to be not right if I cannot even get the laptop working after finalizing the Factory Windows Installation (clicking Next > Next > Next etc)![]()

Sounds like a software issue, I'd wipe the drive and reload the OS and go from there personally.
-
I have already done that. Have done a clean installation from the recovery partition, same story. Display flickers a few times and crashes after display driver popup.
Afterwards I have done a clean install using a Windows 7 Enterprise license installation disc. Again right after booting into Windows, after the login screen a crash...
But how can this be a software issue? Even the factory installation should be functioning. And not much can be misconfigured other than clicking Next, next, next, typing your Username and Enter... -
Make sure to install SP1 before the graphics driver...
-
Its possible that its a hardware issue, I wouldnt think the onboard IGP is having issues though.
Its more likely you have a bad stick of memory, did you put additional memory in the laptop?
The other thing is SP1 needs to be installed before the device driver is installed, this is a bug that is part of the Intel HD driver package, it would be present in the Lenovo driver as well i'd imagine.
Try downloading the UBCD (Ultimate boot CD) and burn that to a CD and run Memtest and see if you have any memory faults. -
Thanks for the replies!
I have not modified anything on the machine besides getting it out of the box, install the battery and push the button ;-)
I did run Memtest86+ and it showed no errors after finishing the scan. System specs: 4GB RAM installed, i5-2540 CPU and IPS screen, 320GB HD.
I am now installing SP1 just after installation of a fresh copy of Win7 64 bit. When succeded, I'll download the drivers from the Lenovo website and report back ;-) -
Done a clean install. Right afterwards the SP1 installation. Followed by the Intel HD Graphic Driver 83d627ww. Reboot and crash right after the login screen. Screen flickers a few times, taskbar doesn't show up only the round start button, icons on the right are shown on top of each other and the system hangs...
Have absolutely no idea what to do next... -
If I disable windows Aero Theme it doesnt crash right after startup.
But when running a HD video or even the Windows Experience Index assesment it crashes again...
This is really the most bizarre thing I have ever seen on a brand new laptop. Like I have said, this behavior has been there since the first push on the power button with a new factory installation and no hardware modifications...
Anyone with similar experiences? I have no other option than sending back the unit I guess... -
I presume you have updated the graphics driver.
I got a similar response until I did that. -
Which graphic driver did you use?
-
I know your going to hate this idea but try this.
Format with your OS of choice (Win 7x64 it looks like)
Install all Updates from Windows including SP1
Install all drivers from Lenovo EXCEPT the intel graphics driver
Deploy this driver
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...rsion=Windows 7, 64-bit*&DownloadType=Drivers
Thats the one im currently using with success. -
Pfff think I'm gonna toss it out of the window...
Did exactly like you said. Fresh windows install. SP1 install.
All the windows and Think Vantage updates available exapt for the display driver. And it runs fine on a 1024x768 resolution.
Then installed the Graphics Driver you suggested and the resolution went up to 1366x768 (deliberately disabling Aero Theme). So I ran Windows Experience Index Assesment and it crashes again!!!!!!!!!!
