I just got an X220 and like it very much. But I haven't found a good way to open the screen. The curved lip of the top edge of the screen mates the edge of the base so well that it's hard for me to get a good hold of both the edge of the screen and that of the base to separate them. I noticed a little indent in the edge of the base on the right hand side but the space is still too tight for my fingers to work well there. There are card slots on the sides but I am afraid to use them as gripping points. What's the best way to open the screen?

I just "apply slight pressure" with my middle finger from right hand on right front side (where the first card slot is) and then use my left thumb on the indent on the right side of the lid cover (where the indent on the base is) to lift it.

    Is this post a joke?

Uhh... try holding the base down on a side or something, and use the middle of the top edge of the lid?

Holding the base down by the edge of the ethernet port and using the middle of the lid works well.

Thanks everyone and no this is not a joke. I just couldn't find a good place to hold the base down. I guess I will have to use one of the card/port holes on the sides as suggested. This does increase the chance of damaging the computer via static discharge though. :( My office has this carpet that generates statics like crazy. Once I got a shock (discharge) with my fingers about an inch away from the venting holes on the left hand side of the laptop. (I was trying to feel whether there was hot air coming out of the vents.)

On the front to the right (near the "ThinkPad" logo), there is a recessed area in the body of the laptop. I usually hold the base down with my left hand and use my right hand to open the screen at that location.

Yep, agreed. That's exactly what the recessed area is for.

I generally use a crowbar to pry the screen up. If that doesn't work, hold on to the base, shake it really hard, and eventually the screen will start to come up.

Where exactly do you put your left hand to hold the base down though?

    LOL.
