Hey everyone, I have a Ideapad T420 on order right now, but after really looking at it the X220 may be a better match for me...
I have a quick question about the screen though.
I have a 24" Samsung at home I will hook it up to when I have it home, otherwise it will be out with me, at school etc.
I was wondering considering this do you think that I need the IPS display or should I be fine with the normal one. Right now I'm using an HP envy 14 with the brightview display, and I don't mind it at all. I take it the X220 is like this one?
Also I have a spare Intel 6200 wireless card here at home, I was wondering if I can use it with the X220 or is it whitelisted?
Thanks!

Displays are a matter of choice most of the time, unless some are so bad that they are unbearable to look at. If you are ok with standard TN panels then go with it and save yourself some money.
The question you have to ask is how much are you gonna use it out of your house? If you are using it sparingly then it really does not make a difference if the display is IPS or not. It also depends upon the type of work you want to do on it. IPS is recommended for working with pictures/video since color reproduction and gamut is much better. If its just for documents then it should not make much of a difference. IPS is nice to have but if you are not gonna put it to use much then might as well save money and use for an SSD or some other upgrade.
Sorry, I have no idea about the wireless card. The Intel option is same price as thinkpad b/g/n or 20$ higher. I would just configure it that way. -
See this video:

The difference is stark. -
As for the wireless card - if it's just a run-of-the-mill standard miniPCIe card, I'm sure it'll work fine as long as you've got the drivers. The Intel 6205 card is listed as a $17 option, if that's any guide to compatibility.

Needs to be whitelisted in BIOS. Since there isn't a 6200 card available, I doubt it will work.
-
I can guarantee a standard minicard won't work, it has to be a lenovo branded card or you can hack the whitelist out of the bios.

Lame. Prices in Canada are much more expensive for upgrades than the EU or US... The IPS Display is $150 more, and the intel 6205 is near $40 more.
-
That's not fair! Has it always been $150?
-
you mean has always been 150 for such a killer display. YES.

Wow. I didn't know anybody did that. Not very nice at all. I switched out the wireless card in my S6F twice without incident (found one that worked with Leopard out of the box)
