So I bought my X220t without a hard drive (only have the 80gb mSSD) and it appears that I don;t have any rails or a caddy to install my own hard drive in. Is there somewhere that I can buy these? Or can I call support and get them to send them to me? It was cheaper with my student discount to buy the mSSD and not get a hard drive and install my own so thats why I didn't get one from Lenovo. For reference I have a hitachi travelstar 320gb that I'm trying to put in.

the X220 uses a 7 mm thick 2.5 inch hdd, i haven't seen many aftermarket adapters for that yet.

Usually the hdd cage comes together with the Thinkpad hdd, and they are not listed as separate FRU for parts ordering. You would need to call up IBM parts and talk to them.

Where did you order from? Afaik in the US the msata isn't available directly from Lenovo still.

Forget about the 7mm drives. If your Travelstar is a 9.5mm drive, you don't need the rails, only the normal size caddy which you can get from ebay very cheaply. See this for how to install a 9.5mm drive in the X220.

Unfortunately I bought a 7mm drive not even thinking the caddy and rails wouldn't be there.

I'll probably contact IBM parts and see what they can do for me.... Is there a lenovo specific 9.5mm caddy that I need to get if I return this drive and end up getting a 9.5mm drive?

If it is like the T420s, the caddy doesn't add a lot except provide a tab for pulling the drive out of the slot. You can probably make an approximation to the rais using some thick rubber bands and fix a piece of strong tape to the drive as a removal tab. There are rubber rails on ebay but none specifically mention 7mm drives.

well you can use some foam tabbing to fill up any free space around the drive. The metallic cage on the ebay (for around 5 dollars) should work the same for the 7 mm and 9.5 mm drive. The rubber rail doesn't seem to work interchangeably (but i could be wrong on this).

Obviously the above will be the most cost effective way of going about this upgrade.

So will this caddy work (with the modifcations in the above thread)?

    Hard Drive Cover Caddy IBM/Lenovo X60 X60s X61 X61s | eBay

I can't find anything online about the X60 series hard drive thicknesses (I'm assuming its 9.5mm). I figure I can buy this like you guys said, perhaps modify it slightly. and put some foam or cut up the rails to go around any other space issues.

I'm also thinking this path will allow me to upgrade to an even larger 9.5mm drive down the road if I want.
