So I started hearing a high pitch whine around the area of my ram slots when using chrome and that led me to investigate said noises. Found it only happens with chrome and not firefox and ie9.
However, even when not using chrome, there is an audible noise- cpu like- from the ram slot area. The noise seems to go away when the computer is plugged in to the power adaptor. Anyone have experience with this?

I notice this too.. Not on X220, buat E420.
Try disabling the CPU Power Management in BIOS, them try it without power source. Does it fix your problem ? -
The effect is called microphonics.
It is unfortunately normal behavior. I bet it is happening with chrome, because chrome modifies the "platform timer resolution". -
That is sad news, muting the speaker doesn't work as well
Guess have to sacrifice battery life then :| -
Try using Opera. A better browser and power-efficient.

Or Firefox Aurora/Nightly. Throw on Adblock Plus and NoScript for maximum speed.
