I just did an update on my X220 and it downloaded new audio drivers. Now in the Control Panel I have 'Smart Audio' which I don't recall seeing before.(perhaps it was there and I didn't see it).
Anyway, there are lots of controls and sliders but nothing seems to make any difference at all to the sound playing through the speakers.
Has anyone else had any success with this?

Smart Audio gives you more control over differant aspects of the sound such as balance and an equalizer for music.

In addition it let's you easily configure the microphone to block out background noises, etc.

I don't really use it since I always leave the equalizer at default.

I use the icon that looks like a Half Moon located towards the lower left side, and this increases the sound level a bit more than default. I also toggle the equalizer (500 and 1k) up a bit to increase the sound level as well. The default settings give the sound level a tiny sound and not good.

Thanks for the comments on the graphic equalizer. Yes I know what its supposed to do. But as I said the problem is that nothing I do in any of the Smart Audio controls makes any difference to the sound. I can play an audio file and move the sliders up and down. It doesn't change the sound at all.

The speakers are so abysmal that the difference the equaliser makes is pretty minimal, to say the least. However, you should definitely hear a difference with head phones on. If not, there is something wrong. Make sure that you click on the on/off button just above the individual frequency adjusters (there are about five or so of these buttons and the on/off is on the far left). Also the one on the far right saves your frequency selection. :)

In that case, go into control panel/ sounds and make sure smart audio is selected if there is an option to do so.

Or try getting the latest driver from the Lenovo site and installing it over the one you updated with.

    Sorted!
I rolled-back the audio driver and immediately the graphic equaliser started working.
Then I did another Lenovo update, which offered me the new audio driver again, and after that the equaliser still worked.
So either my original download yesterday was corrupted, or that version was faulty and Lenovo replaced it.
Either way, I'm now happy. Thanks for the helpful suggestions!

These are the only settings I played with to increase the sound level.

    Hey-
Can someone comment on whether the PC beep sound comes out of the normal speakers, or whether there is a dedicated speaker for that?

I just recently bought a Toshiba Satellite, and it came with SmartAudio. I don't like the defaults, and wish to customize it. But it seems it never remembers what I had it set as, and changes every time I turn my computer off, giving me the crappy sound again. I've been looking around on the internet to see if anyone else has had that problem, but I can't seem to find anything. Maybe there's a "save" button I'm just not seeing?

    Appreciate replies, thanks.
