I have Lenovo X220 and whenever I try booting it up with my external harddrive attached, it does not get past the initial bootup screen. When I turn off the computer, unplug the drive, and turn the computer back on, it works perfectly. I've tried plugging the external HD back in after the computer is on and it works perfectly too. I've tried going into the BIOS and putting the internal hitachi drive as first in the boot priority, but it still does not work.

I have noticed though that sometimes it does allow me to boot with the external HD attached, only if the computer was shut down previously with the external HD attached.

Is there any way for me to boot the laptop with the external HD attached even if it was not attached prior to the previous shutdown?

What is your BIOS revision? Update your BIOS. This issue was fixed in a release in late 2011

BIOS Version 1.26 12/1/2011. I've tried updating the BIOS but the update utility says I have the latest version.
