Even though my panel looks fine, because it's not the new one, I think it's defective and therefore should be replaced.

    :D

I should try that approach when they release the successor to the T420...

I'm definitely getting my panel replaced soon. I sent a private message to the mod in the thread at the lenovo forums on the best way to proceed.

I have priority, next day on-site, but I want to confirm somehow that I'll be getting a new panel.

Honestly, i can't wait to get this fixed. The throttling issue is gone, and the fan sounds normal, both fixed in the bios updates. Soon I'll have the ultimate laptop!!! :D

So any builds post mid-august would have the new panel?

    Quit trying to mock me.

I paid 50 bucks for a PREMIUM screen upgrade.

    1) Light bleed from at least 5 places
    2) Image retention
    3) Uneven gaps where the 2 plastic pieces on the lid meet.
    4) Yellowish tint over the whole screen.

Sorry but this IS a problem and if there are new panels, it simply PROVES that lenovo knows the old panels are faulty.

But you make it fun by taking everything so seriously. I was not mocking you per se, but the general level of anal retentiveness that is sometimes displayed around here.

Are they replacing the screens in the X220Ts as well?

This would be a welcome fix.

So they have use a new panel for the current production run or will the new machines run into the same problem as the early adopters.

All current X220 machines should have the new panels, as erik stated in the linked Lenovo thread:

This is good news for perspective buyers. It's a uplifting to see Lenovo be responsive of its customers needs and wishes.

My X220 has the new panel no ghosting just some backlight bleed, and it is brilliant compared to the other TN LCD on Thinkpads.

Not all of them. Mine was shipped 8/12, and I have bad ghosting on the icons in the task bar...still love it though :)

I've seen ghosting and definitely blacklight bleed on my X220T, and its annoyed me at times in actual usage, so I'll be getting my panel replaced at some point.

I have 3 Year, On-Site, with accidental so they better replace that ish.

So, I have an X220 that was built the last week of august/beginning of september, and I'm going to assume it has one of those new panels.

There is some backlight bleed, but I feel that this is due to the frame around the screen pressing on it and I'm not sure if it's a problem of the panel itself.

I have seen only a single instance of possible ghosting over the past month, and that might not have even been ghosting as I have not been able to reproduce it-I use noscript in firefox and I saw the "Scripts blocked" text at the bottom of the window linger for less than a second after the yellow bar it was displayed on disappeared. I use this laptop on all brightness levels, usually 11 during the day. Anyone have a good way to test if the screen ghosts?

Additionally, I was linked to a page that lets you test grayscale banding with a test image. The panel in my laptop looked identical to the "good" example on the page and there was no obviously visible banding.

I think it needs some more time before it's conclusive that these panels don't ghost, but I've been having a good time with mine so far.

I usually have a good eye for banding and ghosting as my phone's AMOLED screen displays these characteristics at times, so the fact that I haven't seen anything yet is probably a good thing.

Seems like you were right on the transition time; they moved to the new panels beginning mid-August :p

Ok, just got my screen replaced.

    Manufacturing date: 110820

    Observations:

    1. White point temp is slightly warmer. (Not an issue for me)
    2. Backlight bleed is less on the bottom, now almost unnoticeable when the brightness is maxed, and the screen is black.

    3. I can still make the screen ghost... Sorry to report this. The issue is MUCH reduced now, but in grey gradients, in high contrast situations, there will still be a slight ghosting issue.

At this point, I think I'm about done with this issue. It's hardly noticeable.

No need to apologize. Image persistence isn't exactly unique to the X220's IPS panel. It tends to happen (to varying extents) on many, many non-TN panels.

Well, whether or not this is the case, the only time I've ever experienced ghosting is with this specific LG panel. And I have a bunch of other various types of IPS and VA screens in my office here...

I've got a T43p that displays some image persistence as well as an (old) Dell IPS on my desk at work which has some *very* noticeable ghosting.

I will grant that it's a lot less common with most modern IPS/AFFS panels: the X220's is definitely an outlier in that it has noticeable image persistence yet is a new panel.

I just sent in my X220 for repair to resolve the light bleed issue (IPS panel on mine), and we'll see if I get one of the newer IPS panels. I'll report back on this.

If you notice it, the screen have ghosting problem. If you don't notice it, there no need to worry it's not bothering you.

Got my screen replaced, still suffers from the backlight bleed-through at the bottom. After reading more about it, turns out there's not much I can do.

I had onsite replace the screen while I was getting another issue resolved. I confirmed with the phone rep that it was the newer IPS panels they were sending him. I couldn't find a manufacturer's date on it but I didn't really look that hard. It was an LG panel.

Tech guy came and was going to put in the new screen when I noticed it was glossy! I kept my original screen since the bleed/ghosting isn't really bad for me at all I just figured I may as well get the new screen if I could. But a glossy one? Not having it. Just a heads up.

No, that is not a glossy screen. There is a protective film that is on the screen. There are no "pull-tabs" to remove it. But I promise you, it is there, and it should be removed.

Just got my x220. haven't really used it yet (i'm in the notion of installing msata ssd and clean install) so have not seen any ghosting but there is bleed at the bottom very visible in the thinkpad boot screen.

Funny thing is i did not notice it at first. I think this happened after opening/closing it couple of times. Also applying a bit of pressure at the bezel makes it go away. I actually think this is just bad manufacturing quality.
(I have one of this 1 Gen. flat LED TVs. It also has bleed but much less noticeable). Not sure what to do. annoying when watching movies but else not visible.
