If use an Intel 310 SSD (mSata) along side a 320gb mechanical drive, how will this impact my battery life?

If you are using the hdd as a storage drive and the msata as your OS drive then it should improve your battery life. The msata runs cool, doesn't have moving parts, it's faster, and draws less energy which help your battery life.

Yea but if I keep programs on the mechanical HD, then it will frequently spin up and down, while the SSD will always remain active. Also, won't the mechanical HD consume a bit of power even when idle?

You're defeating the point of an ssd by installing programs on the hdd. HDD's barely consume any power when they're spun down.

    Thanks.

Unrelated question, will I void the warranty by installing the mSata SSD myself?
