Also that wouldn't explain why it's working perfectly on some i7 machines and not at all on others. And the i5 does not have an USB controller...perhaps they "accidentally" wired the mSATA connection incorrectly, lol.

Official word just came through!
Huzzah! -
about time. Now do i set up my new system now or wait until the bios update, wish i knew when in july this would be solved
-
Interesting. So the mSata works on all models not WWAN upgradable. But doesn't work on some models that are WWAN enabled.
Seems backwards, but I am very glad it is a BIOS fix not a mobo replacement.
My Intel 310 gets in tomorrow, I suppose I can hope it will be one of the ones that will work. Either way I suppose I can wait through July. I just hope the new BIOS doesn't break anything like the new W520 BIOS (disabled TurboBoost). -
-
That's good news, I guess. I'll stick tight with my non-detected mSATA drive until Lenovo comes out with a good fix for it. Glad to hear, according to the Lenovo guy, that it's not a hardware-related malfunction.

-
Well mine doesn't see the Intel 310.
I suppose I ought to try it in the W520 to make sure the drive is not DOA, although being Intel I suspect it is OK. -

I ordered an X220 without WWAN, so it should work, according to Lenovo. But I installed an Intel 310 in the WWAN slot under the palmrest, but it's not recognized in the BIOS. I've tried removing and re-adding the SSD several times…
What am I doing wrong? =S
EDIT: Well actually, on the order sheet at the time, it said: Integrated mobile broadband:
Integrated Mobile Broadband - Upgradable
[add $125.00] Integrated Mobile Broadband (Ericsson F5521gw) with 21Mbps D/L
and I picked the first one... does that count as a "WWAN model"? -
Yes, Voltai I believe your machine counts as a WWAN model. It already has the wiring, etc for the WWAN card - if you stick one in there, it should work.
That also means that your Intel 310 will probably not work as per Lenovo's bug.
I'm in the same boat and I hope that the bios fix in July fixes things! Otherwise, loving the machine. HDD is a bit slow though
Best,

Well crap, wish I had found this thread before I ordered my X220 and an mSATA drive.
After Googling around it sounds like a small number of owners are still getting away with functional mSATA support, or am I wrong? -
I have the i7 configuration and I had no problems with my 80GB intel 310 msata drive. Just received it 4 days ago too with firmware 1.16. I updated to 1.17 and the drive still works, guess i'm just one of the lucky ones.

Quick question; I'm going to installing a mSATA SSD plus a regular SSD at the same time. Just in case my x220 does not recognize the mSATA SSD and I have to wait for the BIOS fix, is there a way to test the mSATA SSD before installing to make sure it's working OK? Want to make sure I don't get a dud. You never know, the fix may be out before they arrive! Ever the optimist. Thanks, Dan

I have a WWAN enabled machine (came with Gobi 3000) and my mSata (Intel 310) works fine. So it is really hit or miss. I installed mine, pulled the HDD out and booted, it recognized it no problem. Installed Windows, popped the HDD back in and I was in business. This machine is just so damn quiet now without the HDD running.
I did dl the latest chipset inf from intel before trying to do the install. Don't know if that made a difference or not, but if you are having problems... may be worth a shot. -

The new BIOS is out finally.
