I just bought a X230 with a 320gb HDD which I plan to swap out with a ThinkPad 180GB SATA 6.0Gb/s 7mm Solid State Drive (P/N 0A65630). I've read a number of forums but would just like some clear answers/tips on how to do this install. Ideally, I would like to have just the SSD as my only drive on the Thinkpad. What manner should I install the SSD in? Should I make a USB backup of the 320gb HDD factory settings, swap the drives and then try to boot off the USB? I don't own an optical drive and would rather not purchase one for this single purpose.

    Thanks in advance!

Get an external enclosure/dock or usb/sata cable. Use Macrium (free) to clone the hdd image to the ssd.

You can reimage your machine with the original Lenovo recovery media, since it is Windows 7, it should align the SSD correctly.
