    X230 antennae

    I upgraded the wifi adapter on my X230 from an N-2200 to N-6205. According to the service manual (linked below, page 68) I should have 4 antennae (grey and black for wifi, red and blue for wwan). A 5th antenna (white) is present only if there is no camera. Mine has a camera, and no wwan card.

    I opened my laptop up and I only have 3 antennae in there - grey (connected to N-2200), and red and blue (capped, not connected). Does anyone know if I can use one of the WWAN antennae as the auxiliary for my N-6205. Right now I only have the grey connected, and windows connection properties shows 150 Mbps, not 300, indicating that only 1 antenna is in use.

    Do I have the option of installing the 4th antenna myself?

    Usually the cables have a small tag with a number printed on them to designate where they connect on the card (the card usually has a number printed near each connection as well). If your cables and/or card do not have these designations, one of the auxiliary cables should work fine, though I don't know which one will be best. You'll need to attach one and test. You won't damage anything by using the wrong cable, just make sure you don't accidentally break the antennae or the connector on the card. :)

    Did your purpose of upgrading for increase speed or increase in range?

    I have an X230 and I find the N6205 to be utter utter crap when it comes to wifi range. Unless your in the room directly above the router or in the room when the router is located, the wifi performance is poor. I've tried many difference drivers and both windows 7 and 8/8.1 with the same poor results. I ended up buying an Asus usb stick that I use concurrently.
