    x230 i5 3210m / 4g / 500g@7200rpm / hd4000

here's what i got for Windows Experience Index

    processor 7.1

    memory 5.9

    graphics 4.9

    gaming graphics 6.3

    primary hard disk 5.9

    overall 4.9

my question: is it normal for hd4000 in 3210m to score so low for graphics?   i have a mac mini with sandy bridge i5 that scores higher in graphics than this.

I think that's typical. With the 3320M I'm at 5.0, and other reports are about the same. Does your Mac Mini have a discrete graphics card?

I know that increasing RAM can actually increase the Windows Aero score--I'll know better in a couple of days.

WEI is highly unreliable, you can run it 3 times and it will spit out 3 different results. It gives you a very GENERAL idea of how your system performance is, but you shouldn't go 100% by it. Oh and WEI gives my RAID 0 SSDs only a 7.8 on HDD performance, which is ridiculous, what is faster than RAID 0 SSDs?

Yup, it's only a general indicator. My single SSD scores 7.9 which doesn't really make sense being higher than a RAID 0 setup.

RAM does indeed increase the graphics score. I went from 4GB with 5.1 to 16GB with a score of 6.6. I've also seen my scores higher than other people with the same system and configuration. So I wouldn't worry too much about the score provided everything works.

Intel integrated HD4000 clock speed depend on your CPU speed, and use the share RAM memory.
The i7 version has the highest clock speed for HD4000 and if you boost the memory with 1600 16GB, I have seen people going up to 6.4 on graphics. (see the T430 thread)

here is what I get. i7, 8gb mem and 256gb ssd.

    processor 7.2
    memory 7.6
    graphics 6.6
    gaming 6.6
    hard disk 7.9

    total 6.6

and I get the same scores each time I run the wei.
so your scores for memory and graphics seems a bit low to me.

After upgrading to 8GB Ram (Corsair Vengeance), my scores are pretty much identical to the posters above:

    7.2/7.6/6.5/6.5/7.9 (Samsung 256GB SSD).

I agree it's a pretty crude tool, but the numbers are very repeatable, and almost identical across different machines--so I disagree with some of the criticisms above. All of the published reviews I've seen have similar numbers as well.

Without question, increasing RAM will increase the score. How much that will affect real-world performance is obviously a different question.

CPU type will determine max operating clock speed of the integrated graphics.

Also memory needs to be in dual channel mode for better performance, so 2x2GB > 1x4GB. Just pop another 4GB stick in there and you're good.

Beyond 8GB, ram speed will then be the driving factor. (in real world)

    (3320M, 2x4gb 1866mhz memory, 320 intel SSD)
    Processor: 7.2
    RAM: 7.6
    Graphics: 6.5
    Gaming: 6.5
    HD: 7.6

WEI is a poor indicator of incremental performance increases.

When I upgraded the ram on my T430s to 8gb the WEI stayed at 4.9

The graphics clock speed in the 3210m is 1.1 GHz compared to 1.2 GHz in the 33xx chips.

Although I didn't really care about the base CPU frequency in the three chips (2.5 vs 2.6 vs 2.8 GHz), I figured that the 100 MHz bump would make a difference in the graphics department. For this reason, I went with the i5-3320M for ~$50 more.

Try running the WEI test after changing your power profile to "High performance" from the battery icon in the task bar

WEI always deactivates all battery saving options and sets the computer to maximum performance.

Just today, my X220 was scoring 6.4 for WEI.. after upgrading my bios and video drivers it went down to 5.7. After going to Lenovo power manager and choosing the "Maximum performance" profile, it went back to 6.3 !!!
