I am wondering if anyone here would like to upgrade their ram to 8gb ram?
I am not sure if I need that amount of ram. Because 99% of the time, 4gb ram is plenty for me.

Given the RAM access door is on the bottom of the unit, upgrading to 8 GB is very simple and for most people not worth paying Lenovo to do it for you.

    Yeah I know.
But I am wondering should I upgrade it, because a pair of 4gb ram is now just less than $50 and I am so tempting to get it.

I'm buying a few adata sticks from Newegg. Should give the graphics a boost and with the mSATA ssd I'll be tossing in this system will be blazing fast.

Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2

PS: I was wondering if we have confirmed that the mSATA port runs at SATA3 speeds for sure? It is my understanding that the Ivy Bridge chip sets support only 2 SATA3 connections per system, but as the x230t lacks an optical drive, the mSATA should have been given the second SATA3 hookup.

I'd recommend it. It's a super cost-effective upgrade. You get to take advantage of a performance increase by using both channels of the IB memory controller, plus you will pretty much never have to hit the HDD/SSD with a normal person's use (If you are going to be running multiple VMs/servers/emulators/etc like a developer might I'd recommend 16GB).

Nope, standard drive. I ordered the tablet with the fingerprint reader and the highend network card (no webcam)...other than that it was pretty standard.

At the time of the order, the shipdate was 6-15. When I log in to my account, the order history is there, but in the detail view every thing is blank so I cannot see if that has changed.

    • Keyboard Backlit - US English
    • UltraNav™ with TrackPoint® and buttonless multi-touchpad

    Got my X230t today!

All I can say is this is an AMAZING laptop. Fit and finish are slightly better than X220 and the keyboard is simply great. To be 100% honest I actually prefer it over the classic keyboard. It feels stiff, has a great depth and a slight click to it. The backlight is nice too.

Also confirming that the multi-touch screen is in fact IPS. Awesome screen, no problem viewing this in bright light.

The laptop is insanely fast too and that's before I even dropped in my SSD drive (supposed to come tomorrow from NewEgg) or my 16GB RAM. Core i7 people will be happily surprised I think.

The battery is a bit ugly. The 6 cell is big and the base is not as clean as the rest of the laptop. Otherwise I'm stoked!

I saw that in the unboxing video and found it a bit disappointing -- it looks huge. Any idea what the total weight is with the 6 cell?

    I don't know, I'm bad at judging weight and I don't have a scale. Maybe .75 lbs?

I dont mind that it's heavy (which it is), but its just damn ugly. The plastic rounded bottom does not match the thinkpad at all. It looks like one of those cheap aftermarket chinese batteries. I'm glad this is the bottom part of the laptop so I never have to look at it.

Reminds me of this ugly chick I used to know named Stephanie

Anyone have a list with differences between the different panels? like whats the difference between the multitouch IPS and the outdoor model? Are they equally bright

If you are referring to the X230t, specifically then both displays are exactly the same 300 NIT IPS display. The difference is the outdoor display is covered in gorilla glass which seems to be more visible in sunlight (though as I pointed out, the multitouch has no problem being visible in direct outdoor light, albeit on the highest brightness). Unless you work outdoors or in conditions where you fear scratching your screen, go for the multitouch.

I definitely would not have two 220s if I didn't have a dock and external displays.

2.5in or mSATA SSD? I'm looking to see whether the mSATA port is legitimately SATA3 and what kind of speeds we can get out of it. I'm planning to get a Mushkin 128GB mSATA3 for my x230t.

Not bad, should have it in hand before the original ship estimate (6-15)....Shanghai China is a looooong freaking way away, though. Last thinkpad got hung up in customs for several days, so I'm not getting excited until it clears....

I have a dock for my W520, but I am selling this as I bought myself a desktop and I dont want a dock for my next laptop. But I think it depends on price if I am getting one, allthough if Asus released their new touch models of the zenbook I wouldnt be in doubt :)

You can mod (with apparently very little work) the standard MiniDock 3 to support the x230t. I personally can't wait 'til we have some cheap thunderbolt docking infrastructure such that I don't have to keep buying Lenovo's overpriced (imo) dock.

You are correct. Commander Wolf was making a forward looking statement on the future availability of thunderbolt ports and their use as a replacement for docks. Right now Lenovo sells a USB3 dock, but many think that USB3 isn't really fast enough to use for that.

When on the U.S site I called the sales number on top. The guy was in Canada and said that they ship from Canada and that I couldn't order from them when in Norway.

I'm a bit skeptical towards ebay, do you have any suggestion for a reseller in the U.S that would let me at least use a re-mailing service like jetcarrier?

Hi give Ted a call at www.HIDevolution.com - I just placed an order with him for the x230t (i've used his services before and I found him to be safe and very helpful). Give him the specs from the lenovo site -and they will order it -once they get it from lenovo they will then ship it on to you. theres a $820 discount at www.lenovo.com the moment so call him soon.

yes -its about $150 -but given that here is a $820 discount -its not too bad. -also if you want to add extra memory or an SSD then you save also (ie 16gb is only costing me $160). postage is about $170 (via fedex or dhl)

That's not bad at all. That shipping estimate was from them to you? And not from lenovo to them I hope.

When do you pay for it and how? Right away or when they get it from lenovo?

Yes the shipping is from them to me. You pay right away (I paid via paypal) -once you've confirmed the order with them they will then place the order to lenovo -once they recieve it, you have an option to upgrade some parts -after that they send it to you.

Give them a call -they are very helpful!

I will probably buy my next Thinkpad from Lapstars. I had my eyes on that shop for a while. I also read some threads here at NBR, and people have mostly positive experiences with them ( Summary: they tend to leave emails unanswered, but orders are fulfilled efficiently).

Before my decision I put together a Thinkpad configuration (for the X230 and X230T) on lenovo.com. I estimated shipping expenses to Finland, calculated VAT I would need to pay (because shipped from US) plus added all things I want to upgrade (ram, msata ssd, etc). I then compared this to the price I would get from Lapstars.

The end result was almost the same (in some cases event lower than the US price). Lapstars also allows me to select RAM upgrades, MSATA options, etc, and they do so with a very very reasonable price. And to get it from the US, it would take time and a lot of effort. Maybe a good coupon could push the US price so low, that this would be something I consider, but currently I am thinking about going with Lapstars.

So you could look at them and try to figure out which one is better.

Does anyone know if the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter II (v2) is compatible with the Series 3 Ultrabase? I have the second version of the adapter and was wondering if I need to update to the third version ( ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III - v3)?

The T500 supposedly accepts both v2 and v3 of the adapter, and I used my v2 with the T500. But I did not really find any information if the v2 can be used with the ultrabase? Dimension wise they are pretty much the same, I don't really know what the difference is between v2 and v3?

"If the computer you are servicing is shipped with an mSATA solid-state drive and a hard disk drive, the mSATA solid-state drive is used for the “cache” function and the Intel Rapid Start Technology. Users are not recommended to replace the mSATA solid-state drive by themselves. Otherwise, the “cache” function will not work and the Intel Rapid Start Technology cannot be used any more."

these: Newegg.com - Intel 311 Series Larsen Creek 20GB mSATA SATA II SLC Enterprise Solid State Disk SSDMAESC020G201
are used for cache, and maybe that's what lenovo means when they say not to use the mSATA SSD as a bootable device? i don't see any reason why a normal 40GB+ mSATA SSD wouldn't work.

also are there any options for a CTO X230 to add an mSATA SSD? they are referenced in the WWAN options part when you configure but that seems to be it.

    Good afternoon everyone,

I just did a clean install of windows on my new t430s.... I've installed a bunch of drivers but there are two that I cannot figure out! They are:

    Unknown device
    PCI Serial Port

Any thoughts on what these could be?

Thank you in advance for your help gang! Have a wonderful day!

Hello! What kind of SSD (in terms of size) will work on a thinkpad x230? Like how many mm?
