I bought a brand new X240 and wanted to use Windows 8.1 instead of the preinstalled Windows 7.
To my surprise I had to learn that Lenovo does not include USB media to install Windows 8, but DVDs. I wonder why Lenovo does this, as the X240 comes without a DVD drive and this type of media is completely useless unless you buy a DVD drive.

Does anybody know how to get the recovery disks as USB media? Or if there is a secure way to convert the 4 DVDs which Lenovo delivers with the X240 ultrabook into USB media?

I don't want to end up starting the Windows 8 installation process with self made revovery USBs and get stuck halfway through ...

You can purchase USB optical drive from Lenovo.
You can download ISO file from Microsoft and using USB installation took make a bootable USB disk.

Windows also lets you save a recovery image of your system to a USB drive.
