1) I noticed that the hard drives on ThinkPads have a black strap of some kind on them. How does this factor into upgrading the drive later? Does the strap have to be transferred to the new drive somehow?
2) Can the X300/301 use any normal 1.8" hard drive (or are there even any non-SSD 1.8" drives), or is it mounted in a 2.5" bay using some sort of caddy?

The strap is on the caddy not the drive. It's there so you can pull the drive out.
I believe you can use any 1.8" SATA drive. -
Thanks, ZaZ.
So is it actually a 2.5" bay with a caddy required for 1.8" drives, or a 1.8" bay and 1.8" drives just normally mount using a caddy? -
The X300/X301 can only use a 1.8" Micro SATA hard disk. The black tab allows you to pull the drive out easily. The X300/X301 does not have a caddy for the drive.

Thanks for the clarification.
