I was pretty set on purchasing a MacBook Air but with all the speculation on the new X300, I'm not so sure anymore. I need a laptop in the next month or so and was wondering whether there was any sort of ETA on the X300? If it's not going to be out for another 2 to 3 months I'm probably just going to go ahead and purchase the Air.I know there's a lot of threads on comparing the X300 with the Air but no one seems to have any idea on the X300's release date...

If the Macbook Air is going to be your primary computer...then I highly suggest you rethink your purchase. Even if the X300 takes longer than a month or two to be released, there are many other alternatives to the expensive MBA...

Fill out the FAQ and post here for suggestions: http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16

I also have a desktop and the Air does fit the bill. I've previously filled out an FAQ and had the Vaio SZ and XPS 1330 recommended but I didn't like either of them. I'm also about ready to switch operating systems, Mac OS X seems like a good change.

Was going to post that. The x300 would also be a dissatisfying computing experience without a keyboard/mouse/monitor. those comps are just too dang small.

Now if you are dead set on an ultraportable... wait. I can't say much... but wait.

Well I do want something bigger than a 12", I'm going to be using it quite often as I'm a college student and will be using it for notes in class, programming, and other standard tasks. So do you mean ultraportable as in a nice lightweight 13.3" or really lightweight 14.1" or are you talking about a new 12" in the near future? Because I'm not really interested in what most people call ultraportables (the 12" and less laptops).

Got an old one off a friend. W3J bit the dust completely and I needed a machine.

I'm not sure the MBA will fit your needs as a college student, or really anything. It's really an enthusiasts notebook. If you really want to switch to OS X, then you could easily go with the 13.3" MacBook. It's thin, light, has much better specs and features and also is cheaper, especially with respect to specs/dollar.

Well as I said, I'm pretty set on a MBA unless the X300 is coming out in the near future, and I don't really want this thread turning into another MBA alternatives thread. I mainly just wanted to know if there was any ETA or more information, but it appears there is not?

Hate to disappoint you, but there hasn't been a Lenovo announcement for anything like the X300. Lots of rumors, of course, but nothing concrete.

Is the MBA actually available already? As in, can be ordered and will arrive posthaste?

It's available for pre-order now and they should start shipping this week.

The Lenovo site says the current sale ends February 4th, so if I had to guess when the X300 is announced, it would be February 5th or afterwards. But availability is something else.

Hmm...I guess I'll hold off for a few more weeks and see if there's any news. Thanks, SpacemanSpiff.
