I know its a weird question and they are un-comparable but i want your advise in choosing.

I use my T42P now at office hooked up into 19" monitor and at home use it without external monitor

    i don't own a desktop

    my usage is light:
    Linux Ubuntu
    OpenOffice
    Firefox
    Thunderbird
    Skype
    IM client

i just want todo these tasks fast nothing more nothing less

my T42P was doing well over the past 3 years when it comes to overload/overduty

so i'm wondering would the X300 would handle the load and overduty ? running between 12-18hrs a day or so ? or should i go for the W500 and lose the ultrapotability ?

    Thanks :)

X300. Your uses are too light for the W500.

I would go with neither. Of course you really didn't mention how much moving around you do with the laptop.

The X300 would be a fine choose if you had a desktop to compliment it, but you don't. Storage and screen size are an issue here. You can always get a external hard drive and use your larger external monitor, but why bother?

The W500 would be good if you were doing heavy CAD stuff, but you aren't.

I would suggest a T400 or T500 based on what screen size meets your needs.

The only reason I would go with a X300 is if you do a lot of travel.

Why not a T400 or T500, both the X300 and W500 of are alot (prices) for your needs.

Good idea, a T400 would be a good balance of price/size.

i wanted togo with SSD for the fastest access ever i do open tons of firefox windows and tabs thats why i want something fast

    also openoffice overload

space is not an issue i've been living on my 60GB disk on T42P with no issues, its just the slowness whats killing me, thats why i wanna switch to dualcore one

i just found few pages that talks about X301, man these models will never end :D

seems sellers over ebay knew about X301 coming thats why they are selling the X300 a bit cheaper than usual

overall the SSD will make the X300 way faster than the W500 ?

even on high load of thunderbird and firefox ? i'm a heavy browsing user and my thunderbird has around 10GB data

Go for a computer with a real processor, not the X300. A good 7200 RPM hard disk paired with a 2.0+ ghz penryn will give you much better performance than what the X300 can give.

The X300's processor is just fine for the tasks that the OP wants to do. Don't judge a processor simply by its rated clock speed as 1.2GHz is more than enough for non-workstation tasks.

My X300 has never felt slow a single bit doing normal office productivity tasks. In fact, the SSD offers good performance for tasks which are IO intensive rather than CPU bound, which is often the case for the X300's typical use case.

    now i'm confused

it seems getting W500 with SSD with 2GB ram would match the price of X300 these days

and adding 4GB ram with AT&T would be around $3K

You have to ask yourself if portability is a concern for you. If it isn't, there's no reason to get the X300 over the W500. You cannot compare the 2 on a similar scale.

I know for one that after carrying 3lbs notebooks around all day, I'll never settle for anything heavier than that for travel.
