They're about the same price on CCP, and the SSD equalizes performance. Why should I go for the smaller X200s?

The x200s is about 1 pound lighter (no DVD, though) and can go 10+ hours on battery alone vs 4 hours (or less) on the x300.

The x200s is only about .6lbs lighter on the 4 cell and much less on the 6 or 9 cell batteries. When on the 4 cell it nets about 4 hours of battery life same as the x300 on it's 4 cell I believe.

One nice thing about the x200s is you can slap a SSD drive in when they get cheaper.

the x200s is also much faster with the 1.86ghz 6mb cache with 1066mhz fsb....u would highly go with the x200s just for that - because its very very similar to a full voltage processor while the x300 is not

The x200s isn't that much faster and will be slower depending on what you do since the x300 has a SSD

The X200s can be equipped with a 64GB SSD. And it can also be outfitted with the Intel Core2 Duo processor SL9400 (1.86GHz, 6MB L2, 1066MHz FSB).

The X300 will come with a 64GB SSD, but the fastest CPU available is the Intel Core 2 Duo SL7100 (1.2GHz, 4MB L2, 800MHz FSB).

Drives being equal, the X200s gets the edge due to a CPU with faster clock speed (35% faster), larger cache, and faster front side bus.

35% faster in just clock speed - is that much faster, that is DEFinitely a noticeable difference, not forgetting the 50% higher cache and the higher fsb

true, but if you want the power of a full powered laptop, you go with the x200 plus get much ligher perk.

but you lose stuff too.....got my x200 today by the way, did a clean install and absolutely love it. the trackpoint was newly loved within 5 min and never used one before

No it can't. The x300 has an ultrabay for an optical drive or other accessory, that and the touchpad are its defining features. The x200(s) has an SDHC/Memory Stick slot, 54mm express card slot, legacy modem, and dock connector; the x300(1) lacks all of these and gets worse battery life.

However, there is currently a tradeoff in features between the x200 and (s) variants. The x200 can have a webcam and WWAN (same as the x300), but it only has a 1280x800 CCFL screen. The x200s can have the same resolution 1440x900 LED screen as the x300, but it loses the webcam and WWAN if you choose this option (although it is substantially lighter, and you can put a WWAN card in the express card slot). Further, the x200(s) can get an SSD if you are willing to fork over $700 (I am going to wait for a 128GB SLC SSD to hit $200 before I make the move).

Yup, I'm goning to order my X200s with the cheapest HDD available (80GB),
and replace it with a SSD (128/256GB) whenever get cheaper.

Perhaps we should compare the x301 with x200s,not the x300
    x301 has a digital port while x200/s dosn't

the x301 is still much slower in terms of cpu power because it uses the ULV processor compared to the LV processor.

but then again, has a touchpad, optical drive, etc

all relative to what you need

All this discussion about CPU speed is overrated. I can bet that 80% of X200/X200s users don't even utilise the full power of the CPU by doing CPU intensive tasks. The regular X200/X200s user will probably perform regular Office tasks and compile lightweight apps because those requiring more power will probably have gone for a full-fledged workstation. The X300/X301's performance isn't even CPU bound at all. It's like driving a V8 car in the city but not really putting it on the race track.

But even driving it in the city, you appreciate how fast it is off the line!
