I am a new Thinkpad owner. Just received my X301. The flex around the letter Q, and P, seem more than I had expected. The surrounding keys flex with the respective keys. Is this normal behaviour? Or do I have a defective keyboard?

    Thanks for any feedback.

    Do you like the keyboard?

I'm guessing if he's asking if it's defective, than not so much ;)

It's not as firm as I had expected, especially around the letters Q & P. But it's not the end of the world. I had heard that one of Thinkpad's strengths is their superior keyboards. Just want to make sure that my keyboard is normal for a X301.

A defective keyboard is if a key doesn't work...keeps repeating...falls off etc. Is it flexing under normal typing conditions? If not then it should be fine and no cause for concern.

This is a shame. Two of the biggest hallmarks of the ThinkPad are its no-nonsense matte black casing and solid keyboard. Why Lenovo is making an effort to drop the ball with their keyboards is beyond me. What’s next? A ThinkPad with a glossy non-rubberized cover? Oh, that’s right—look no further than the ThinkPad SL series.

Someone needs to start firing people.

If one presses hard enough, the keyboard will flex. Nothing is really that solid. That's the case of the NMB on my Thinkpad.

The NMB keyboard on my T61 has almost NO flex. Just around the up/down/side arrow keys there is a LITTLE flex. But, you could put some serious pressure around most of the other keys, and there is NO flex. Very solid keyboard !!

I cannot say the same for myself. The T61 NMB replacement keyboard that was sent to me for my T400 has resulted in, pretty much, no flex.

My enter and esc keys do flex under a bit more pressure than typing requires. Should I ask for a second replacement keyboard then? The ALPS I had used had bigger holes on the back and was slightly worse in terms of flex.

My X301 keyboard does not flex under normal typing conditions. If you apply pressure to it, of course it will flex.

Ya my x200 has no flex under normal conditions (except the esc key which I don't care about) but in some area if you press on it hard it will flex. The areas where it flexes is over the hard drive where there is not direct support under the keyboard.

It doesn't really bother me at all when I type so I don't want to have to pick up the phone and go through all the hassle to get a new replacement.
    To each his own.

Same. That is my mentality with the issue. If there is no adverse effect when i am using the keyboard in normal circumstances then I don't have an issue. If it was bouncing all over the place with normally typing in that case I would do something about it.
