    Hi

I'm looking at upgrading my T61 to a X301 and I have a few questions in regard to wireless USB and the 6 cell battery.

I previously installed wireless USB (UWB) and antennas into my T61 and I'm looking at removing the half height card and re using it in my X301.

I've had a look at the X301 hardware maintenance manual for the antennas and it seems there's an antenna assemby with connections for two wireless cards, but it doesn't detail a UWB antenna connector.

Does the X301 come fitted with a UWB antenna connector near the RAM slots ?

With the 6 cell battery, what's the size increase compared to the 3 cell? Are there any comparison pics ?

    Thanks

Someone else will have to fill you in on the UWB receiver (do UWB peripherals even exist?).

I believe the 6 cell battery extends a fraction of an inch from the bottom surface of the x301. However, I don't think it extends below the feet and should not increase the size of the x301 in an appreciable way (the weight difference is also small). Unfortunately, the 6 cell for the x301 is below average in capacity (42 WHr IIRC, vs. 56WHr for the x200, T400, and T61).

    It's negligible...

It's a trade-off, and I'm glad that Lenovo didn't kill a really thin & light notebook with a huge and, in my opinion, ugly tumor sticking out of the back.

Also, its capacity (43Wh) is about standard for this category of devices (Mac'Air- 37Wh, Adamo - 40Wh) where the purpose obviously is to make a really thin (and possibly light) notebook regardless of the sacrifices involved in achieving that. The new T400s is the latest member of the same family.

I'm aware of the tradeoff. The main thing that irks me is that they all get marketed as "6 cell" and the far more important WHr (which can vary 20% or more with the same cell count) rating is generally buried deep in some technical manual.

That's true, but even if the information was more readily available (it is with most brands), people would still find a way to misuse it in one way or another. For example, I find it quite entertaining that most people around are somehow addicted to the mAh capacity and often come to the intriguing conclusion that there is Voodoo magic involved in batteries... In other words, information is only valuable to those who know how to use it properly, and they will find it anyway, otherwise it's just a bunch of meaningless numbers used on a random basis.

For the record, the capacity of the batteries used in the X300/3001 series is as follow: 3-cell-bay - 24Wh, 3-cell - 27Wh, 6-cell - 43Wh.

Sadly I fear that you're right. I guess we share the same pessimism about most consumers.
