I just bought an X31 w/o the X3 Ultrabase. All I would want from the base is the ability to access an optical drive.

I figure the price of the Ultrabase (46P7912), as well as the CR-RW/DVD (22P6991) amount to the same price as an external DVD burner.

Does anyone have thoughts on this? Also, if I was to just go external via usb 2.0, does anyone have a suggestion on a good slim external DVD burner?

i have the x31 and i regret getting the X3 Ultrabase, i brought it because i like the idea of all in one design with no cables, and also i have an ultrabay 2000 battery that i can still use with the X31. But later, i realize that i wont carry the ultrabase out just for the extra battery, together it is even heavier than R series.
i think the x31 itself is great (i want the x40 now....haha), but for the price of the slice+combo, you can get a external DVD+RW slim drive or combo + extra battery.

    check out the silm combo

    or dvdrw drive

by lacie, i think they look the best and really light.

thanks for the heads up regarding the Ultrabase. Given the current prices, I'm definitely going for the external optical drive, powered through the USB 2.0 cable.

Have you had any experience with either of those 2 slim Lacie drives? The CDR-W seems like a fair buy (~$145.00), however, the DVD+-RW looks a touch overpriced (~$290.00).

    Anybody have alternatives to Lacie?

no i have never tired one of these yet, i want to but i already brought the X3 base last year.
There are a few CDRW around, even ibm has one, just that you have to becareful some need to use external power to work, i had a sony combo before, is small as the lacie but is basically useless (need to carry the power adapter anytime, anywhere)

Can you install the OS using the external USB or firewire drive?

I had a VAIO 505 once that required a Sony CDROM to install the OS.
