Which of these systems is the best buy? They are identical except for the GPU's--Intel 900 vs. ATI Radeon 16MB (Mobility 7000?).
Which is the faster and by how much? Does one consume more power than the other?

Are they identical? What about the X3 Ultrabase? Or the extra 256MB RAM?
I actually think that the GMA900 will be more capable. The 7000 is a really old chip and 16MB of RAM is very limiting. the GMA, at least, can dynamically allocate up to 128MB, I think. -
The nice thing about the Radeon is it does not take memory from the system memory, but neither is a gaming card. The x32 is made for mobility not gaming.
-
16m m6 is better if you want to get a whole better performance.
after all it can not occupy the main memory ,wich will lead to the bad effecft on the whole system as if you would increase its mainbord memory -
Yeah, there are differences in memory and the X3 Ultrabase. But I will max out the memory and so I am realy looking for opinions on the two GPU's.
If I install 1GB+ memory, the dynamic memory allocation shouldn't be a big issue. So from your answers I guess it doesn't matter that much which one I choose? It isn't like one has distinct advantages that make the other a really bad choice? -
The GMA900 can have the advantage, since it offers hardware support for DirectX 9 routines, unlike the 7000, which only offers DirectX 7 level of support.
-
even if you increased your mainbord memory, the GPU sharing the main maeory will also occupy some of the bandwidth of the mainboard and this maybe brings the disadvantages to the whole performance.
this is the disadvantage of GPU sharing main memory. -
Totally rediculous. GMA900 completely destroys the ATI 7000. Too many people have a bad taste in their mouth because GMA900 is an integrated graphics solution. Thinkpadds are not designed to be gaming machines. The GMA900 can handle any business related graphics application with ease. As long as you have 1gb or more of ram, your system will not be affected by the 128mb max allocation of ram for graphics.
Just a quick note. Most of the posters here are complete idiots. If you put most of these posters in a Microsoft lab and asked them to solve problems, they would scratch their heads and look confused forever without solving anything.
I posted a question asking why it was taking up to 10 seconds for my internet explorer window to open on my T43. I received very sincere and idiotic repsonses for my T43 problems. 4 year old todlers could solve thinkpad problems better than most of these idiots.
The GMA900 integrated grahics is all you need so long as you have enough ram. That's what I have and I build gaming desktops. If more graphics horsepower were needed for notebooks, I'd have it. -
intel 900 is not the same generate product as the M6, of course.
but,x32 ati radeom is benefit for not cutting down the the bandwith of mainbord, which should not be denied except that "you" have "a head full of water". Before saying i"diots"
make sure you are not an idiot. after all, someone saying "idiots" allways stands among "idiots"
if only compare the ati m6 itself with intel 900, anyone can get the result that m6 is not as strong as intel 900 -
At what time does the integrated Intel graphics chip interfere with bandwidth? We are not running super computers here. My T43 would not qualify as such. 16mb of Video ram wasn't even best in 2000. The good cards of the year 2000 had between 32mb and 64mb. It's almost 2006. I can assure you a 16mb graphics card will certainly hit the CPU reducing performance before the integrated graphics solution will, even after taking away 128mb from the system memory. My T43 has 1024mb of ram. The Radeon 7000 is an ancient card. My Intel integrated graphics scored 3000 point on the 3D Mark 2001. I can assure you this Intel 900 will outscore the Radeon 7000 with 16mb of ram.
I didn't say everybody here was an idiot, just most of the posters. With the rise of internet chat forums, everybody is an expert. If you would compare the Radeon X300 or X700, of course they would outperform the Intel 900. Most people think that an outboard graphics card is better simply because it has a free standing GPU. In most cases, this would be true if it had at least 64mb of ram and wasn't several years outdated.
Of course when I built my last home computer and installed 1GB of ram, everybody said why do you need so much ram? That was 2 years ago when most computers had 256mbx2. Now top computer games perform best with 2gb of ram. I don't know everything about computers. I learn very quickly though. It easy to feel like a prodigy when surrounded by so many people who rode the short bus to school. -
If you have 1GB system memory, GMA900 should be able to defeat Mobility Radeon 7000.
-
How did you find that second X32? To my knowledge, the X32 only uses the Radeon. According to the tabook.pdf, there are no models with the GMA 900 graphics. I don't believe that the chipset in the X32 is capable of supporting it anyways, unless Lenovo has very quietly done a major update.
If there really is a GMA 900 X32, though, I want one. -
I located it on eBay. I'm also pretty sure the specs are wrong now. There is nothing listed anywhere else about an X32 w. GMA 900 graphics. Would have been nice though.
