    Hi,

My dad has a 3 year old X40. Recently he has been complaining of lack of hd space (at one point I think he said he had less than 1 gig left) so he wanted me to factory restore it. He did backup some of his files, although it was a very superficial backup meaning he copied the important work-related files only, and nothing system-related.

After he was done, I began the reformatting. Here's what I did, very straightforward and simple:

    1) Inserted the quick recovery CD and rebooted
    2) Clicked on restore factory settings once I was in Rescue and Recovery
    3) Followed on-screen instructions (changing CD's etc.)

Everything went smoothly until the last restore CD was completed, and it prompted me to restart the computer. I removed the CD and rebooted it. However, instead of launching Windows and doing what factory restore typically does, it brought me back to Rescue and Recovery and I can't seem to get out of it, no matter what I tried doing in BIOS or in RR. Windows just refuses to boot. I also tried reformatting it again but it didn't help.

Has anyone experienced similar problems or knows how to fix it?

    Thanks a bunch.

    **Edit**
There's an error message after re-trying to restore. It would say "IBM Product Recovery failed to restore your system" while processing 2GJJ05A_.IMZ.
    What the heck is that??

when it takes you to rescue and recovery is there an option to restore to factory state? When you load the cds, all its doing is copying files to the hidden partition, it then is supposed to automatically restore from that partition after all the copying is done. If it is not proceeding automatically, you might have to choose to do it manually. Just a shot in the dark.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes there is and after clicking on that this is what happens:

First there doesn't seem to be any activity for about 3 minutes. Then it would start processing a whole bunch of files with .IMZ extensions. But at one point when processing 2GJJ05A_.IMZ, and when that's almost completed, an error msg would pop up "IBM Product Recovery failed to restore your system"

At this point the "Total progress" bar is at about maybe 5%. After clicking "ok" I'm back in RR and nothing's accomplished.
