I've done some searching but haven't really found a good alternative. I've got an x40 on the way, but didn't get the usb multi burner or media slice because of the cost. I'm looking for a usb powered dvd-rom (which I would assume reads CDs as well). Anyone know of a good, slim/light model that is a better value than IBM's? Targus has one but it's listed at $400, and the cheapest I could find on froogle was $350.

Edit: I just found something that I missed, also from Targus. http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=PADVD010U
Anyone have experience with this drive? It doesn't include any writing capability which is fine, because I just want something to watch DVDs or occasionally read a cd when I'm on the road.

Try looking at the Sony MDP-AP20U. It's been around for a long time already.

It is a combo dvd/cd-rw when connected via USB 2.0 to a PC

Doubles as a battery operated mp3 player that can play mp3's off DVDs.

I'm getting one myself for my X40 :)

You might also want to take a look at Lacie's Slim Combo CD-RW. I bought one for my X-31 (instead of lugging around the ultrabase, etc). It's extremely light, thin, and has both the option for AC powered, or just USB 2.0 powered. It also comes with half-way decent software suite (Roxio Creator). Check out the website http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10102 to do comparison shopping.
