Hi, I could have a deal for X40 or a X41, what would make me want to go for one or the other?

Both have 512 meg ram, 1.5 ghz PM, 40 Gig HD, WiFi b/g.

I would look at the x32. It is a little heavier than the x40/41, but has better battery life than the those. The x40/41 use a 1.8" hard drive. They only run at 4200RPM hard drive speed and cannot be upgraded. The x32 uses a standard hard drive which can be upgraded to a faster speed. The also use regular Dothans in the x32. Good Luck.

the X41 is slightly heavier than the X40, are you sure on the 1.5GHz for the X40? Usually it's a 1.4GHz Dothan processor for the X40 and the X41 features an X41 Sonoma architecture processor -- for this reason the X40 runs slightly cooler and has slightly better battery life, and the X41 is slightly faster than the X40, better graphics performance and has built-in biometric finger scanner on some models. If one is cheaper than the other go for that, if it's close money wise go for the X41 for the added performance if you want it, or if you want a lighter weight go for the X40. Both good choices, and the X32 is worth a look as zazonz says -- for me I wanted light, light, light.

I thought the x40s used the ULV voltage and the x41s used the LV Pentium Ms which run up to 1.6Ghz. You can get the x32 with up to 2Ghz which I think makes them regular Dothan Ms. I thought the standard battery on the x40/41 was a smaller one good for about 2-2.5 hours. They do have a larger one, but sticks out a little from the back. It also adds about .5 pounds of weight to the machine making it close in weight to the x32. I guess my point was, if you want good battery life from the x41 you are going to have to get the larger battery which makes it close in weight to the x32. So if they are going to be close in weight, the x32 might be the better choice since the hard drive can be upgraded to a faster rotational speed and you can have it with a faster CPU. My 2ยข anyway.

    Thanks guys...

The X40 I could have is a 1.5 ghz because it's a custom model by lenovo for a business school where i went but where I still have good contacts with the computer store so I could have their volume prices. The X41 is from the visa saving site in canada.

X32 looks interesting but it seems to be never in stock on the ibm web site.

The main difference between the to model I am looking at are the X40 comes with a CDRW/DVD external usb2 and a 4 cells battery and the X41 comes with the UltraBase 4 dock with CDRW/DVD and a 8 cells battery. So the battery is better but as you said, it's 2.7 lbs versus 3.2 lbs for the two models. The price is exactly the same except for I can have the X41 with the fingerprint reader for 50$ more.

I think I could get myself a X41 and buy a 4 cells battery so it won't stick out in the back for most of my work and still have the 8 cells for when i'll need lot of battery times...

Uhmm.. I was also looking at the Dell X1 for the WideScreen and same size but the 1.1ghz cold me off... and I always had TP and I love their keyboards!!!

You could try eCost. They have some x32s and I do believe they ship to Canada.

Thanks, but they are really more expansive.. for a 1.8 and 512 ram without optical drive (external or docking) they go for 1500$ US with shipping and conversion it's gonna be way over 2000$ CAD as the X41/X40 I'm looking at are 1990$ CAD no shipping fee.

Finally I'm gonna have a X40 since my contact has received them today as for the X41 on the IBM website, there is a 2 weeks minimum wait.

Hi all, I had the X40 for 3 weeks now and here are some thoughts.

For sure it is tiny and very light which is why I bought it. I don't have any problem with the speed as with 1.5 gig of ram, photoshop and others run smoothly.

Battery life with the 4cell is ok but could be better. With the wireless on doing web programming it could last 2 hours. If music is playing it drops to 1.5h. Without the wireless though I could go for 2.5 and almost 3h of web programming.

One of my complaint is the usb ports. The one with the little usb powered under for the external drive don't seem to be powered cause the only thing that works in there are the usb key that don't need power and the external drive with the little usb power hook up under it. My optical mouse don't work in this port and neither my external usb 2.0 harddrive. This is anoying since I can't have my mouse and the external drive hook up at the same time in the other USB port (on the other side) that works perfectly.

For the rest, it's classic ibm, good keayboard, good chassis, good trackpoint, no crashes...

I had to use ibm service in canada since I tried to create the recovery cd to get ride of the hidden partition and I cancelled it in the middle of the extraction but the computer didn't liked it so everytime I tried to start the creation again it fails. I called IBM, they made me tried several steps on the phone and got bored so they sent me the cds free of charge. Then I got rid of the hidden partition and took back the 4 gig it occupied

    That's it for now.
