    Hi,

I am having problem with the X60 I just bought with Intel T2400 1.8ghz. It currently hangs after I ran Prime95 for ~30 minutes. I have tried with and without tpfancontrol and they hang with and without the tpfancontrol software on. It usually hangs after it goes to suspend first, and I force it on.

The temperature hovers around 95C right after I start the PRIME95 even with the fan on. Seems like the fan can't keep up and the BIOS had to throttle the CPU to 1.3ghz and 1ghz (info from cpu-z).

I also installed Windows 7 and did the windows update. I also installed the thinkvantage tools (the power manager).

I opened and looked at the heatsink and they are clean. I didn't get to re-thermal pasting it though.

What do you guys think is the problem?

my X60 would only reach a temp of 80 to 85 degrees after using prime95 for 2 hrs. You probably need to reapply the thermal paste, and give the heat vents a good clean.

    " I didn't get to re-thermal pasting it though."

I'm never an advocate of rethermal pasting mainly because the reasons given are science fiction HOWEVER in your case you have removed the heat sink without repasting it. Turn your computer OFF and run (don't walk) to your computer store and get some Artic Silver and apply it. Follow the directions and apply it sparingly.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I didn't get to remove the heatsink also. I only looked and cleaned it up on the spot. The temperature indicator through tpfancontrol also jumps around actually. So one second it might be displaying 98, 95, then 15. Is this normal?

I left my computer on running prime 95 for 5 hours since morning and it stays on. Although it again shuts down when I try installing avira (after turning the prime95 off). I feel like this might not be an overheating problem.

What's also weird is that when it shuts down, it seem to go through a process (ie. it turns off the display, and I can see that it is still accessing the hard drive before finally shutting down).

I have not had it repeat the "hang"ing again.

Maybe it is a hardware/driver issue? What do you guys think? Anyone with a similar experience? I will try maybe formatting and installing the driver again one by one if it doesnt work out today.

It might also be similar to this?

Nevermind, it hangs again. It hangs while I was playing around with the intel mobile display driver. It hangs, I force it to shut down.

Turn it on and tried installing avira while having prime95 on. It goes to sleep. I wake it up multiple times and it keeps on going back to sleep after it gets on the windows environment. Avira keeps on trying to install during this time. One time it doesn't go back to sleep and just shut down. This is not the normal shut down though since when it wakes up, it asks me if I want to launch the windows repair.

Can you get the idle temps of the system? You may to give the CPU heatsink a full clean as in take it out physically, clear the vents, clean off the old paste and apply some new paste in as the old paste may have hardened to ineffectiveness hence the high temperatures.

If the temperatures are in normal ranges you can try Safe Mode on Windows and use it for a bit and see how it goes. If it doesn't hang then there's a possibility its a driver problem when you try to boot normally into Windows.
