I'll be starting first-year Engineering in September and I'm looking for a good laptop that I won't mind hauling around constantly. The X60 / X60s seems like a great ultraportable. The only thing preventing me from buying one tomorrow is the ancient GMA 950 graphics (which would preclude the use of 3d visualization software / CAD) and the low-res 1024x768 screen. Has there been any rumor of an update to the X60 coming soon? The X60 dates from January 2006 so it's overdue for a refresh. I hope they release an X61 soon with Santa Rosa, Robson memory, X3100 graphics, resolution of at least 1280x800, flash card reader, and ExpressCard slot.

I started out looking for a tablet that would be good for the same sort of usage, plus ocasional light gaming.. but came up empty handed.

Really, I don't know that the X3100 is going to be optimal for any serious 3D work either.

One of the biggest differences between the GMA950 and the X3100 is supposed to be that the X3100 has hardware TnL (transform and lighting) integrated into it, thus taking that load off of the CPU and giving it to a processor more suited to it (the X3100). It's also supposed to have some shader pipelines integrated as well, whereas I'm pretty sure the GMA950 offloads most if not all of those operations to the CPU through software.

The GMA950's lack of these hardware abilities is probably its biggest weak point, so hopefully the X3100 addresses them appropriately.

X61 appears to be announced in Taiwan and China. Looks like little is changed.

According to the site it uses the Core 2 Duo 7300 / 7500 - this means it's based on Santa Rosa correct? This bolsters my hopes for an X3100 GPU.

    We live in exciting times.

Now I'm just waiting for the L7300/L7500 to make it into a widescreen ultraportable, 11.1" to be exact, Asus S6Fm please? ;)

This is a business/executive notebook and, accordingly, will NOT be available in 1200x800 widescreen format for the X61.

Try the Z61 for widescreen, it's a wee bigger but has options more suited to the non-business person and kids
