Hello all,
I just got my X60 today, and was somewhat surprised at how much the outside cover of the display flexes. I have read everywhere that these laptops are incredibly rigid - including the displays. I feel like I need to be quite careful when carrying it in my bag. Is this normal? How much protection does the outer covering provide? Just to make the situation clear: when I (gently) push down on the center of the outside covering of the display, it flexes inward a fair amount. Had I not read so many review proclaiming how sturdy these computers are, I probably wouldn't have thought too much about it. Other than that, the X60 is pretty impressive.
Second question: since I - as of yet - have an external optical drive for uploading programs, can I use my other computer (via a USB cable) to transfer information, e.g. anti-virus, word, etc.)?
Thank you for your time,
Jim

it's supposed to flex a little, then stay solid. It's part of the design, and makes it stronger. When you push down, the movement you feel is the display settling into position, after that it will be firm

Do you have any sort of network at your house?
Transfer programs through that.
Or easiest way would be with a usb thumb drive. I just bought a gig on on newegg.com for like 20bucks. -
Yup, the solidity of ThinkPads is rather over-hyped in my opinion. My T43 flexes in all sorts of places, and some of the plastic pieces have even developed cracks. Not too impressive.
That said, if you were to compare the flexibility of your display to that of almost any other laptop a similarly thin screen, you'd probably find that the X60's screen takes abuse much better. The metal lid and the 'lip' around the edge of the screen make a big difference.
