I just purchased a used X60s through the EPP pricing (dad retired from IBM), model 1704-69U. I also received two free copies of Vista and office 2007 pro from a MS launch event my wife and I went to this week. Well, I decided it would be a good time to try out the new OS on the laptop as it will be my wifes primary machine and she does not game at all. I did a fresh install, grabbed and install the drivers from lenovo's page and away I went.
So far the experience has been good and I have another gig of ram coming tomorrow to make it even better. The big downside is that this laptop is for my wife so now that everything is pretty much done I have to give it up. I do, however, first have a few questions as there are certain things that don't seem to be working right in Vista.
1st. Processor scaling. When I played with the x60s with XP the processor dropped to somewhere in the 800mhz range on bat power. Now that vista is installed even on battery the system information puts the speed at 1.66... no reduction. I have all the lenovo battery software installed and using the power manager I set the plan to "power source optimized". This has the performance at the low mark though the CPU does not seem to scale.
2nd. Sometimes I get a freak performance hit that, as far as I can tell, only effects the screen brightness functions. I hit Fn+Home or End and it takes 2-5 seconds before the level changes, and my CPU spikes to 100% on both cores. I can reboot and things speed up again but as soon as I reduce the brightness to 1 and try to go up again it runs into this problem.
3rd. HDD space... where does it go? I have 88.5 GB of useable data and between widows, office, and the rest of my files I am taking up 14 GB... but it says I only have 60.8GB free. Where did the other 14GB go? I know a paging file can take up space but 14gb?
Thats all the questions I have for the moment... I'm sure I will think of more. My biggest challenge at the moment is going to be finding a use for my wifes old T23. Hmmm... It just barely meets the specs for Windows Home Server...
