I am about to buy a X61 for a friend of mine.

It is going to come pre-installed with the Lenovo OEM version of Vista Business. He however wants to install his Vista Ultimate OEM version that he recently bought.

I don't assume it is possible to install his Vista Ultimate using his Vista Business key? The reason I am wondering is that I would want to save the Vista Ultimate key for a clean install on a different PC, instead of wasting both keys on the same PC.

Clarification would be greatly appreciated. I have searched for this topic and albeit there might be many threads concerning the same issue, I couldn't find one addressing this one.

Nope, once you install the Vista Ultimate OEM on a single PC, it is bound to that PC like all OEM editions. Similarily, you cant transfer the Business OEM edition that comes with the X61 to another computer. Better for you is to save the OEM edition for the other computer, and buy the Business-Ultimate Upgrade from microsoft for X61.

True that each OEM license is limited to the computer it was first installed on.

Of course, this is only assumed if you are following the law.

If you dont use BitLocker then I see no benefit of getting Ultimate over Business. In term of performance I believe Business version outperform other versions since it doesnt come w/ all other stuff like media center, ..... all those stuff run as services by default unless you disable them.
I myself is using Business x64 on my T61

Some people might want the multimedia features that Business doesn't have, like Media Center, DVD Movie Maker, w/e.

I think VLC beats media center for playback. One ring rules 'em all :D
man, use desktop for making dvd, laptop is meant for mobility. Well, unless you're gonna use the laptop exclusively.
