I just received my x61 on Friday and so far it seems pretty good. However, when the laptop is closed the lid has some play in it (up and down) and does not seem like it is solidly shut. It seems to be more on the right side than the left (the left side has very little play). I am wondering if other people have this same problem? Please respond. Thanks in advance.

Mine is OK. The led closes perfectly. The only thing that is not 100% perfect is the battery. It has a little movement, but it is not that disturbing.

Yup I had the same problem on my R61, contacted the support, they said it was normal and part of the design. I don't really buy that, but I can't get anywhere with this problem.

I went and checked out a couple more R61s in stores, and they all had the same thing.

Thanks for your responses. I did not expect this type of thing from IBM/Lenovo notebooks because they have always been "solid." I purchased this x61 because I thought that the quality control of this laptop would have been better than dell, hp, etc. The dell, sony, and hp notebooks I have had previously all were solidly shut when closed. When ever I move my x61 (when it is closed) there is so much up and down movement that I feel as if the latch is not locked in. I guess I will contact Lenovo and ask them if they will be able to fix it.

They said to me that they will take a look at it and fix it if it's out of spec. The first time I sent it, they said they couldn't recreate my problem, thus nothing could be fixed. Got it back exactly the same way. Second time I sent it in, they said they fixed something and it's now back to normal and closing right. But when I got it, it was the same way.

Spoke to their techs again, and they said it was normal for the lid to do that...which seems very unreasonable because like you said, when the lid is closed it moves to much that I feel it's not closed. I'm afraid to pick it up, because it moves to much and I feel damage is done everytime I close the lid due to the clanking.

Anyway, I'm done with lenovo, their CS is crap and their supposed thinkpads are even worse. I'm going with my old Acer which is infinitely better build than that POS of a thinkpad.

Same issue here on my new x61s. It's not that bad but there is about 1 or 2mm gap when you close it. Curious if I should call tech or not
