When I have my X61 on battery power and the screen on about 10 (out of 15) there is a noticeable flicker that appears to come from the blacklight. This is not a flicker as in a change of resolution, but a steady image with a noticable pulsating from the background. Anyone else with this problem or ideas on how to fix it? Thanks.

This is not normal. I have no issues on my X61 at any brightness settings. I assume you are referring to the phenomenon usually experienced when the screen refresh rate is too low (on a CRT screen)?

I trust you have updated your system with the latest drivers and updates? If yes, I would call tech support.

The symptoms point to a defective screen inverter. Should not matter whether too low or too high. On a brand new X61 it is a shame on Lenovo. Sloppy quality control.

He should also check his refresh rate settings to make sure you have them at the right setting

The next time you unplug the AC adapter pay attention if the screen flickers afterwards. If it does, thats a different problem from the LCD/inverter issue.

The problem is intermittent and happens (as far as I can tell) only while on battery power. I tried to change the driver, but it claims that it is updated to the most recent version and the driver I downloaded from Intel wouldn't let me install (required an OEM version).

I called Lenovo and they changed the battery optimization in BIOS but the problem still exists. If it was an inverter issue, wouldn't it always be a problem? If I send it in, I'm not too sure they would fix it since the problem is not always present. The best way I can describe it is as if I had an old CRT with the refresh rate at 60hrz. Something that some people don't notice, but drives me crazy.

The default/correct refresh rate for the X61 monitor is 50 Hz. But unlike CRT screens when set at too low a refresh rate, LCD screens don't flicker. Hence, I suspect it is a hardware issue and I would have Lenovo inspect your X61.

I have just yesterday experienced the same problem on my brandnew T61. The problem only occurs when running XP on batteries. I have not been able to reproduce the problem when running linux ord dos off a cd-rom, so I am pretty confident that it's software-related.

When I changed the backlight-level from '0' to '1', the screen-flicker did not happen anymore (in the BIOS-Power-Settings, everything is on Default).

Are you running Vista or XP?

    Heyla --

Same problem here, on XP Pro. Is there an actual fix?

    Hi,

I have the same problem on a brand new X61s. I had it replaced by the vendor, but on the new machine ist was even worse (eg happening on more brightness levels).
The conclusion in this thread suggests that it is a hardware problem on some machines:
    http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=32867&highlight=flicker
I'll call my vendor tomorrow to see if he will replace it another time. I'm very reluctant to send the notebook to Lenovo since I haven't used it for even a single minute. Does anybody know, how long I'll have to wait until a replacement arrives?

Edit: BTW I tested Vista, XP and Linux. The same on all OSs, so it very certainly is not a software problem (which is also indicated by the solution from the thread mentioned above).
