Are there ANY laptops that don't do this these days? My t60 makes the noise if cpu power management is enabled (disabled loses about an hour of life) and the Santa Rosa platform that I was sure would stop this has it on the X61 as well.

Noise comes the same area as the T60 on the X61, right near the ethernet port where the power regulators for the CPU seem to be located. :(

yeah....it is a result of the cpu entering the c4 sleep state (power-saving state). there really doesn't seem to be any way around it other than by disabling c4 (i.e. running hlt command in rmclock or disabling usb power saving modes).

my fujitsu didn't have a problem with the whine (t2300). i think turion x2s may have a lesser frequency of having it...

On my T60, it seems as though the ATI graphics also plays a part in the annoying sounds, as during gameplay it comes out. Downclocking the card using powerplay seems to take care of it though, but kills gaming.

I'm not sure if there *is* a notebook out today that doesn't. All the laptops I've had usually had some form and degree of it, not sure about the MBP, it's been a while. Either way, I'm surprised that it really hasn't been addressed by Intel yet.

Try using RMClock and instead of running HLT command, just disable Popup Mode.

Another solution is to use LINUX! I'm using the latest Ubuntu and it doesnt make any noise when running on battery mode.
