I saw an ad on Craigslist for an X61. They are selling it for $100. Is it still worth that much? Is it fast enough for most applications?

They're going for about $150 to $200 on eBay, so $100 is a pretty good deal. Should definitely be fast enough for most things, but the latest version of SolidWorks obviously won't be blazing fast.

It should be a decent laptop if you're using for work and typical computer stuff (video, music, picture, website, etc).

Here is a link of X61 spec

X61 for 100 dollars is a steal. It can support 8 gigs of ram and sata3 (with bios mod).

    I love mine X61 with the T8100 CPU, a beast (and i love mine X200 & X220 too).

+1 - I have a few mates who have them and regularly use them for travelling with (lot better than a netbook bundled with an Intel Atom CPU) - best thing is the spare components for this model are still relatively cheap (well they are in the UK) especially for replacement motherboards with the T7100 or T7300 CPUs. :)

That's an incredible deal! I would buy it immediately. SSDs are pretty affordable nowadays, so put one on it and add some RAM and it would be a perfect portable companion ;)

$100 is a good price. Worth comparing prices against a one-gen newer 12.1" HP 2530P (uses DDR2 RAM) or 13.3" Dell E4300 (used DDR3 RAM) to see if a stretch for those is worth it. A same-gen HP 2510P could also be one to consider with a nice LED-backlit 16:10 LCD but it has some limitations - only 1 RAM slot and uses a PATA 1.8" primary drive and IDE optical drive.

I personally wouldn't go for the NC2510p, although the LED WXGA screen would be an improvement over XGA (+ the extra optical drive) the 1.8" PATA drive is a big limitation and those drives are more expensive than standard 2.5" ones.

It would be interesting to know more details about that offer, how much RAM? Which hard drive? Is it in good shape?

    My 2 cents...

I'd go for it, although the wifi card may emit uncomfortable amounts of heat on the palmrest as was in my case. Swapping it out for a newer card should do the trick there.

The seller hasn't gotten back to me. I assume it's been sold.

I see another offer for an Thinkpad X200 for $240. Is that a good offer?

I got an X60T and I swapped the wireless card from a T61 and it runs cooler also ran RMClock. @frnchung if you have a price limit why dont you check out eBay?

The price should be dependent upon the spec for it (i.e. CPU, RAM, HDD) but also what accessories it comes with as well...that's just my tuppence worth. ;-)

The handy thing for the X200 would be the screen resolution would be higher than on an unmodified X61 (i.e. 1280x800 vs. 1024x768).

EDIT - Bear in mind for both of the laptops your looking at the CPU is soldered onto the motherboard and if you want to upgrade it you need to replace the motherboard planar completely to do so.
