I think I've read somewhere that it couldn't go higher than 3GB? Can it take 4GB (2X2GB).
I ordered it with the minimal 1GB RAM so I could ditch it and invest in a couple of 2GB modules without losing much money.
The setup will eventually run on the XP OS (once I get rid of the sucky Vista) if that changes anything...

And if the entire thing is doable, I was wondering if the Kingston KTL-TP667/2G would be optimal for the job. or if you could recommend an even better alternative (aside from the direct-from-the-source pricey Lenovo option).

    Many thanks in advance!

Will you run XP 32 bit or 64 bit?

I'm not sure...I was inspired by the other thread in the forum on hwo to downgrade to XP. and so I'm looking to get a student copy of the XP as a part of my try to save a buck plan (otherwise I would have ordered it with the XP pro).

I don't know whether that Student version XP is 32 or 64. would it make that much of a difference? would 4GB of ram not be recognized/work with a 32 bit XP? I didn't even know there were different bit versions of the XP...

    Please advise :(

The Student versions come with both XP 32 and 64 for the price of about $10. It's the exact same as XP Pro. Install the 32 bit one because there is lack of drivers for the 64 bit.

Only about 3.12GB are recognized by 32 bit.

Thank you both for your help and information.
Great link John B but I'm afraid that I cannot fully understand it (english is not my first lang and I'm not tech oriented) and would just need a small confirmation about it:
Would the 4GB upgrade be fully used on a 32 bit XP (whether it's fully recognized/showing in specs on the computer or not)? Or should I just settle for a 3GB setup and save my money?

    question for Arkit3kt:

I just noticed that LEnovo does offer 4GB setups on their X61 along with an option for an XP pro os? I don't think they would even offer that if they knew that it would be unpractical or not show in an organized manner when viewing the specifications on the machine.

Thanks for your help people, I really appreciate it.

Although they do offer it, I believe the 4GB is there in case you decide to upgrade your OS.

See erik's explanation about Physical Address Extensions (PAE) at http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=49703 The first part is about the T60/p series. Skip down a little to the T61/p series.
