After some research I turned on the "Enable advanced performance" function in Vista for my Hitachi 5K160 120GB hard drive on my X61. I wanted to see if it would give a noticeable performance increase.

To my big surprise (or maybe not so big, since it is Vista we're talking about) after rebooting, it took at least 3 times as long to boot and at least 5 times as long to shut down the PC.

Needless to say, I've unchecked the function again. However, I am curious. Anyone else experience a performance decrease instead of increase, using this function?

Any fixes to this? My system should be as up-to-date as possible via Windows Update and ThinkVantage System Update.

I've read that it only improves HDD performance on a RAID configuration. You also risk losing your data in a power failure if you have that feature checked.

From what I read it said that a standard SATA drive should benefit from this function. Regarding the risk of loosing data: Correct, but with a battery connected to your notebook a power failure should not be an issue.

In any case, I have done a backup and I am going to buy the 7K200 Hitachi drive soon, but was curious about the effects of this function. Had no idea it would decrease harddrive speed on my system instead of increase.

Anyone else have experience with this?

BTW, Sp00n - Assuming your X61s came with Vista: Do you remember how long it took your X61s to boot with Vista (including all the pre-installed bloatware) when you just got it?

It's not about winning, but understanding.

I have visited several other sites stating the same.

In any case, what I am interested in knowing is whether other people have experienced the same problem.

I know. I was just snidely pointing out that you and sp00n only offered blank, meaningless assertions.

I don't see a performance difference when i checked that option.
