That's the best I can describe it. When I press down on the plastic between the Thinkvantage button and the Power button on my new X61, there is quite a bit of give and you can see the plastic being pushed down. It doesn't require much force either.

Just wondering if this is normal? I had the impression that Thinkpads are built like bricks.

I have a new X61 and just tried pressing down on that area... there wasn't much give at all. This isn't really a vulnerable area of the laptop, though, so I'm not sure why it matters if it's flexible or not. Regardless, if there's something really wrong with your laptop, you should get it checked out (the sooner the better). If I have time I'll record a video of how much force I'm using etc and post it...

So you are saying that on your laptop when you press down on the area between the Thinkvantage button and power button, it doesn't move down that much?

    I'd really appreciate the video.

On mine, when that area is pressed, the entire top part flexes downwards (from Mute button to Pause button)
