So I ordered my x61s last week now I can't decide if I should get the ultrabase and optical drive, or just a portable optical drive.

The ultrabase is more expensive of course, but then when I'm home I can just plop my comp into it, and use it as a desktop (i already have a monitor, keyboard, etc) which would be nice for school.

I'm don't know that much about ports, so what exact benefits does the ultrabase provide in this department? Also, how many USB ports does the x61s have anyways?

Just think of all of the ports you need and how often you need a CD/DVD drive during a normal day. If you are not in a hurry, use the laptop for a week after getting it and write down every time you need an extra port or need an optical drive. Then you can evaluate how much you really need the ultrabase.

also, are there any speed issues with usb optical drives? how do they compare to an intergrated drive or one in the ultrabase?
