It happens all the time on my sony vaio, I'm guessing it's default thing to save on battery?

Did you change this in the Bios or in Windows? You can change it to stay on full brightness when on battery in the bios.

You can also set it through the ThinkPad Configuration Program. In the upper right corner click LCD, then it will have an option for Brightness when running on batteries - set that to High and your LCD brightness shouldn't change when switching power sources

thanks a lot, x61s is not with me now, will try it later.

BTW, yesterday there was once the LCD totally lost the backlight suddenly, I tried to turn up brightness, it won't work. But when I tried to turn down the brightness, the backlight came back to life again. Kind of scary and wierd, don't know why.

Acaurora mentioned using the Thinkpad Configuration Utility to change the LCD brightness when on battery. My x61s does not seem to have this utility. I've spent a fair amount of time looking for it both within the thnikvantage programs as well as searching for the .exe. Is there somewhere to get it?
